I was at the store and saw a flyer for an MMA school, for kids starting at age 5. IMO any parent who would allow their kid to do this should have their kids taken away from them as they stepped through the door to sign them up.
Would any of you let your kids / grandkids do this?

Absolutely not. I would not go noodling either, yet here we are.

Only if I could fit him in between his bar boxing and street fighting class... oh, and then there is the Monday, Wednesday, Friday frat house drinking training. Just not sure if there is enough time...
But seriously, I don't see anything particularly wrong with it...

Tramplines and flip-flops are worse. Most people don't have problems with them.

I would imagine with kids it would just basically be a wrestling class. Have them practice holds and defensive techniques.

I have no problem with kids taking martial arts, or grappling / wrestling / boxing whatever. But this is something completely different.

At what age are these kids going professional now?
I wonder how many minors there are now that they have their hands register with their states as lethal weapons. It looks like whatever that number maybe its going to increase dramatically.
They are going to be just too young to be lethal.

Allowing punching and kneeing is sad in my opinion unless they are made to wear much more padding than that. Just too much chance of someone getting seriously injured at too young of an age.

I wouldn't let my kids strike with mma gloves and/or without protective headgear.
At an early age, I would (hell, I do) allow them to participate in traditional martial arts (TKD) including full contact sparring with head gear and fully padded feet and hands and body protection.
Around 10 or so, I'd allow them to engage in grappling....wrestling (freestyle and roman/greco and catch wrestling), and jui jitsu. I'd also let them take boxing lessons with 12 ouncers or higher and proper headgear.
Late teens, I'd consider letting him/her train full contact MMA, but not compete until 18 or so.
The likelihood of injury is too high until then.

I'll take that as the opinion of an authority. JD do you still do mma training? How's that working out as far as getting into shape?
