I thought there was a discussion here about Vista a few weeks back but I searched and couldn't find it.

So is is fixed yet???

I wanna buy a notebook for the kid and I don't want something he is going to have tons of trouble with. It's bad enough the $hit he does online and the problems he caused me with my desktop and his mom's laptop (he isn't even allowed to be in the same room as my two laptops) , I don't need to be dealing with OS issues.

Any advice? (I ain't buying him a Mac, I might get one in a year or so to replace my personal laptop, but he ain't gettin a $1200 my Space and iTunes machine)

Help please.

I wanna buy a notebook for the kid

I highly recommend something in a binder, with a box of #2 pencils, and a sharpener.:p

You and me both. Unfortunately his mother disagrees with us and I have been tasked with coming up with something, cause I'm the computer guy, don't you know. Ha. I come here and can send email, sometimes it actually gets to the person I want to have it, even. These things are just shiny typewriters without a carriage handle and I don't need a case of liquid paper anymore.

How do you think a 3 ring loose leaf would go over if I got him one? He's tall but he's skinny, I could take him. I'm not so sure about the girl.

Having never even seen it, what specifically makes it the pain in the a$$ that I have heard that it is??

Because it's a LOT different than XP. Plenty.

Get him a laptop with XP. At least "YOU" with maybe some "help", could fix it.

He'll need it when goes to college. The little troll. That kid's taller than me now, I bet.

Staying on topic, get yourself the laptop with Vista(sux), get yourself adjusted to it, and then turn it over to the boy. It's not THAT different once you get the hang of it. I personally don't run it anymore, because of personal issues. I think it sucks. I have a 64bit Processor Laptop capable of running it fine, but I personally didn't dig it. I went back to XP Pro.

I forgot you had it. I think I was there when your buddy was upgrading you.

He's about 6'1", and I'm pretty sure he has a tape worm.

I have enjoyed the Hell out of Vista and have had no problems at all. On the other hand, I hate XP with a passion. To each his own

Isn't Vista more similar to Apple's Leopard than the old XP stuff?

Been through this at least twice. My computer was off limits. After waiting 3weeks for the second, or third pc repair bill, I followed my son's advise and purchased her a mac for xmas. She is happy, I am happy, momma is happy, dogs don't growl or bite anyone. No issues. As for itunes, I like it. Got myself an ipod for my b-day. I'm all appled-up.

I hate it. If you have any version of Office prior to 2003, it won't work with Vista. Well, it'll work, but it's a severe pain to get it to work. I never did get Outlook 2001 to work with it. If you have any older software that you need to run, don't assume it'll work on Vista. Also, just a few things off the top of my head: you can no longer password protect zipped files and you need a TON of memory just to run the POS operating system.

Other than that, it's great.

I have vista and so do a majority of the guys in my guard unit. I am not much of a fan but at the same time noone here has had much trouble with it. For the most part we are all college age and our computers are pretty much used for iTunes, Facebook, and Myspace. So coming from a college age guy surrounded by a bunch of other college age guys nobody has had any issues with it so far.

Its taken me some time to get used to it, and it has a few squirly things in it, but all in all its not so bad. I use XP at work and on my home PC, but our laptop is Vista.

I dont have any major complaints yet.

You most certainly can still password protect zip files. Get WinRAR or Winzip, either one will do that for you. You should have been using those in XP to begin with.

Yes, what a great feature. Take something that I could do automatically in File Manager in XP and require me to get a secondary software product to do it now. OF COURSE, I know I could get software to do it, the point is, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided I didn't need this anymore.
