STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy announced the hiring of Jason Jones as secondary coach today. Jones was the cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator at the University of Tulsa last year, helping the Golden Hurricane to a 10-4 record, an appearance in the Conference USA Championship Game, along with a 63-7 win over Bowling Green in the 2008 GMAC Bowl.

“We’re excited to have Jason as a part of our program,” Gundy said. “He comes from a great pedigree and he is very enthusiastic about what he does. He has a great relationship with his players and is an excellent technician. He’s a great recruiter in the state of Texas.”

In 2006, Jones served as the cornerbacks coach at Rice University, helping the Owls to their first bowl trip in 45 years as the Owls competed in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. In his first stint at Tulsa, Jones coached cornerbacks and helped the Golden Hurricane to a Conference USA Championship and an appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. His first coaching job came as a graduate assistant at Alabama, where he helped his alma mater to an appearance in the Music City Bowl.

“I’m very excited about being on the staff here,” Jones said. “Living in Oklahoma, I know that OSU is a great program and university with a great tradition. A lot of outstanding players have come through here and it’s an honor to be part of this program.”

With Jones leading the Tulsa secondary in 2005, the Hurricane defense ranked third nationally in takeaways (36) and interceptions (22) and was the 11th nationally in pass efficiency defense and 17th in pass defense. Jones’ cornerbacks totaled 13 of those interceptions and 29 had passes defended.

A 2001 graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in financial planning, Jones was a two-year starter at defensive back for the Crimson Tide and was part of three Alabama bowl teams, competing in the 1996 Outback Bowl, the 1998 Music City Bowl and the 1999 FedEx Orange Bowl. Jones was a member of Crimson Tide teams that played in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game in 1996 and 1999.

He earned a master’s degree from Alabama in sports management in 2005. He and his wife Kysha have a 14-year-old son, Andrew

Well I like the sound of that...

Before you start giving away your berries maybe we should see how the guy does against the Big 12 rather than the Conf USA

The TU pass defense was awful last year so I don't really know what to make of the numbers. Happy for the guy that he's getting a chance with us and I hope for the best.

I'm not sure what to make of this hire.. I hope he's as great a recruiter as they are making him out to be.

Pass Defense numbers don't really tell much of a story about a secondary since so much of those numbers reflect poor DLine play, and/or poor LB play. If the QB has all day to throw, then somebody is going to get open.

The statistics that were listed with the article are much more telling of how good/bad the TU secondary may have been last year, and those numbers looked really, really good to me.

A good example is the Texas secondary of 2006, where they gave up tons and tons of yards, but almost every one of their secondary were drafted by the NFL.

Yeah, that's kind of what I think too. I'm actually more interested in who the DL coach is going to be. Hopefully it will be someone that believes in something more than just the bull rush and will actually teach swim moves and twists.

Not trying to turn this into a flame-fest, but will you please let me know when you plan on being either realistic and/or subjective about OSU sports. Just once? I totally appreciate that you are a glass half full kind of person as I've found myself being guilty of it as well.

But, just once, I'd like to see where you aren't trying to blow smoke up my tailpipe. Don't take it the wrong way, but you could look at a pile of crap and find something good in it. Everytime.

Barnes was let go, one left with Fedora and I believe in general Beckman is reshaping the staff to his liking since he was not able to with his late start last season.

So see who is coaching what you can check out okstate.com

Do you mind telling me exactly what I said that set you off?

I don't see anything in my post that would warrant your reply.

I'm happy to respond, but I have no idea what your post is talking about or asking from me.

All I said was that I hope he is as good as they say, and "they" are saying that he is pretty good. I'm not sure why you have a problem with that statement.

Like I said, don't take it wrong. You really are a sunshine pumper. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Like I said, I've been guilty of it as well. Your inability to call things turds, when in fact they are, is what I'm referring to. I'm not saying anything about your current above post. Just the ability that you have for finding the best in a crappy situation.

This, by all accounts, sounds like a great hire.

Hope that explains it. I've just never seen you say one thing bad/objective about some current situations. I wasn't trying to slam you in the least. I guess, after I read what I typed again, I can see where you might get that. Sorry for the confusion. I was just talking about all of your posts in general. Does that make sense?

It sure does, but all you'll get is a "pollyanna cramdown" that Boone is GOD, Holder is JESUS, Gundy is their sacred COW, and how dare you, ever question our deities.:p

So, let me get this straight.

I should just rely on first, Pickens, then Holder, then Gundy to tell me that the football team is better now?

Whew. I almost had an opinion. It probably wouldn't have been a popular one. But, whatever.

actually, that's not quite the correct order... it should be:

rely on CC, Pickens, Holder, then Gundy... the football team is all better now you heard it from me, move on. ;)

I am a positive person.. and there is always a bright side to everything. Good for me.

I have criticized some aspects of the program in the past, (like the timing of the QB switch(s), and some offensive play calls), but in reality "we" do not have enough inside infromation to know all things that were considered in those decisons.
