didn't know much about him, but found it very troubling that a CEO/businessman, was named secretary of defense.

seems like a recipe for disaster and the along with Cheney/Rumsfield, what Ike warned us about with the military/industrial complex.

He served in WWII from 1943-1946, leaving active duty as lieutenant colonel.

He had great business success with Ford. He was Kennedy's Secretary of Defense before he served Johnson. Loyalty to his second President got a lot of good men killed. It was all about the "Domino Theory" in southeast Asia and a President who didn't want to lose face in failing to draw a line in Vietnam that blinded our leaders in that war.

You may want to check this movie out. Gives his side of the story about a few of the things. Interesting for a guy like me to watch and understand a bit more about what it was like back then.

I see further that one of his daughters and his son are tree-huggers, that is the son is a walnut and grape farmer in California and the daughter is a forester with the World Bank.

The World Bank? I know I was thinking the same thing.

Agreed, I thought it was an excellent documentary. I did not realize before watching it that he was one of the architects of the firebombing of Japan. And it was interesting to hear his take about the Cuban missile crisis. He does acknowledge that Vietnam was a mistake, but stops short of apologizing for anything.

that's like really, really short sighted, and 1000% inaccurate.

We won every single major battle over there, and successfully stopped every major offensive that the North tried.

The problem (if you really want to call it a problem) was that apparently we thought we were stopping the spread of communism, and they thought they were fighting a civil war.

we could have easily over-ran Hanoi; but we mis-calculated the potential response of the Chinese...

It was honerable what we were trying to do for the South (it's called FREEDOM and LIBERTY), and we learned our lessons on what to call it and how to do it.

No, it isn't short-sighted and it's accurate. Try selling your horse-sh*t to the families of the 58,000+ KIA; I'm sure they'll agree.
