NEWKIRK (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Downtown+Newkirk&CATEGORY=PERSON) — When the cash register stops ringing at R&G Style Shoppe, the ladies of Newkirk will have to travel elsewhere to shop for clothes.
The downtown store, owned by Ginger Weber (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Ginger+Weber&CATEGORY=PERSON), will close after being in business for over 60 years — another closure in a dying breed of mom & pop stores. Weber did not have a specific date, but said the store will close in the next couple of weeks.
There are no other women’s clothing stores in Newkirk, population 2,130, and Weber’s customers say they’ll now drive to Ponca City (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Ponca+City&CATEGORY=CITY) or Wichita (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Wichita&CATEGORY=CITY), Kan. (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Kansas&CATEGORY=STATE), to shop.
R&G Style Shoppe was opened in the 1940s by two seamstresses. One of the original owners sold the store to Weber’s mother, Mary Lane (http://newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Mary+Lane&CATEGORY=PERSON), who then sold it to Weber when she retired in 1979.
Weber said sales at the store have slowed during the recession but she retained a loyal customer base.
"It was real well known. People come to shop from all over the county and Kansas,” she said.
Weber, 68, said that it’s time to retire to spend time with her grandchildren and her husband, who has health problems. Her daughters weren’t interested in inheriting the store, she said.
Downtown Newkirk has changed in her 30-year tenure.
"There used to be all kinds of stores downtown. They’ve all closed,” she said.
"I kept thinking some would come back.”
