Chelf will make it a three-man race
The seemingly unending backup quarterback battle at Oklahoma State has always been a two-man race between Brandon Weeden and Alex Cate, but Clint Chelf’s opportunity to join the fray is drawing near.
Chelf was sitting in the crowd last Monday night as the OSU caravan tour hit his hometown of Enid, and coincidentally, the Cowboys’ new quarterbacks coach, Robert Matthews, was one of the scheduled speakers.
And Matthews has been selling Chelf on not passing off 2009 as an obvious redshirt year.
"I told Clint when he signed that he needs to come in and work like he’s gonna play,” Matthews said. "We all know that there was a freshman, No. 12 (Mike Gundy), back about 20 years ago and it turned out all right for him.
"We don’t have a backup quarterback right now. Both guys on campus have worked extremely hard. Clint shows up (in late June), and they’re all gonna get a lot of reps. We’re gonna let them fight it out, and we’ll see who’s still standing a week before the season.”
