Three Oklahoma State golfers will play the opening rounds of the U.S. Open together Thursday at Bethpage State Park (Black Course).
Rickie Fowler, Bo Van Pelt and Casey Wittenberg make up the all-Cowboy group for this weekend’s tournament.
Van Pelt and Wittenberg left OSU in 1998 and 2004, but Fowler is a current sophomore with the Cowboys.
Fowler has enjoyed success as a top amateur player the last several years and has played a key role for Oklahoma State recently.
This will be Fowler’s second straight U.S. Open after appearing at Torrey Pines last year. Fowler shot one under par (70) in the opening round and survived the first cut tied for seventh. He finished tied for 60th.
Van Pelt, appearing in his third U.S. Open, has not found an outright win since the Omaha Open on the Nationwide Tour in 2003. Wittenberg hasn’t been able to break 70 or survive a cut since mid-March, despite a strong start to the year. This will be his fourth U.S. Open competition.
Although they’ve struggled, Fowler said Van Pelt and Wittenberg don’t need to change anything about their game to win.
