I hate to admit it but I am not a big wrestling fan. I got into it while I was at OSU but over the years I just could not make it to many matches so my passion has faded. However, at the Altus caravan John Smith spoke and he was so passionate about OSU wrestling that it made me think of wrestlingjunkie. I am sure going to miss him this fall. So I thought I would make this post just for him.
John was apologetic for our 16th place finish and said it would never happen again while he was at OSU. He said not only were we just pretty average this year but we drew terrible and that just added to our miseries. He has recruited well. We will have a 134 pounder this next year that he says will be the best wrestler that he has coached at OSU. His name is Jordan Oliver. John likened him to Uetake(sp) or a Pat Smith. VERY, VERY, TALENTED! We will also have a Russian wrestling at 197(I believe that is the right weight) and he said he is worth the price of admission. We had to jump through some hoops to get him eligible(English was a problem) but John said he talked to Holder and that Mike went all out to help him get the kid in school . He made a 4.0 his first semester. His first name is Alex. I can not spell the last name.
We also had what some experts think is our best recruiting class ever this year and the majority of them are from Oklahoma. So I think our wrestling program is back on track. Billy can rest in peace. We still love you Billy.
BTW, this is my first wrestling post ever.

We shall expect many more. Thank you from all of us, here and above.

I attended the memorial for wrestlingjunkie, and have never attended a better celebration of someone's life than that one. John gave an "impromtu" speech from the heart that was moving, and a fitting tribute to our greatest fan.

Yes, Jordon Oliver is going to be an absolute stud. He had an amazing redshirt year and has excelled in freestyle this spring. We bring back some talent, some guys that will definitely contend. Youth is a big factor this year, but John is so good at having these guys ready come the tourney that we may make some noise this year. Next year, we very likely could be a preseaon #1.
Iowa is still loaded this year, so they'll still be heavy favorites for the upcoming season, but we're a definite darkhorse with our young talent.
The russian dude's last name is Gelocaev, don't ask me how to pronounce it, I have no idea.

2008-09 (Redshirt Year): Was very impressive in compiling a 19-1 overall record competing exclusively in open tournaments ... Of his 19 wins, 15 came with bonus points included ... Claimed nine wins by fall, two by major decision and four by technical fall ... Champion at the Missouri Open, the Oklahoma Open and the Roger Denker Open ... Runner-up at the Central Missouri Open only after medical forfeiting the title bout to Oklahoma State teammate Obenson Blanc ... Only loss was a 6-5 defeat at the hands of two-time NCAA Division II national champion Cody Garcia of Nebraska-Omaha in the championship match of the Loper Open ... Wrestled the first half of the season at 125 pounds before making the move to 133 pounds at the Oklahoma Open.http://www.okstate.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/oliver_jordan00.html

I could not find a picture or a video of Alan Gelocaev.
He placed third at 285 in the November 2008 University of Central Missouri Open. Jerrod Rosholt was the Champion in that weight class.
Both wrestled Mark Ellis of Mizzou. One had success with him and one did not.
Alan was pinned by Ellis, but worked his way back to win third place. That may tell us a lot about this young man.

The topic "Wrestling Junkie" caught my eye immediately and of course I had to see what was going on. It was hard for us to go to the matches last year after "Junkie" left us--but we did and we will be there this year in our usual seats. The Junkie so loved wrestling--we both had watched Coach Smith as a young wrestler--probably 12 years old--so yes, we go back a long way. We had reservations and on the list for tickets to this past years nationals, but without the Junkie, Chanda and I didn't want to go--and we were so disappointed in the performance by OSU. Junkie always said--"you don't win four National Championships in a row but what it doesn't kill recruiting--who wants to sit behind all the National Champions we had--recruiting suffered big time."
Thanks for remembering ------to say the least he was OSU's best fan. Love you all and look forward to seeing you come football season.

sooo.. which night is going to be wrestlingjunkie night, instigated by OSS?
hopefully, the weekend of the TTech game, or sometime during Thanksgiving... since I will be in T-Town for two weeks?
I guess we need to see the official schedule, but it sure would be fun to take in a wrestling match, and share Billy memories with those of us that never had the priviledge to meet him.

I agree, If the family wants to pick a football home game that they could attend, I think we should definitely have a "Wrestling Junkie" tailgate.
