STILLWATER — Stopping by an Oklahoma State pickup basketball game last week, a guide was necessary to help identify all the new Cowboys.

It’s a strange thing to see the 2009-10 men’s basketball team working out — namely because there are so many new names. And, of course, the absence of Byron Eaton and Terrel Harris, who have been two of the main faces of the program for the last three or four years. (Games also appear to have picked up their pace without Eaton, who was notorious for calling fouls during pickup games).

But the upperclassmen who should be filling Eaton and Harris’ roles looked solid in pickup games this week, with James Anderson, Obi Muonelo and Marshall Moses all appearing to be in good shape for early June.

Sophomore-to-be Keiton Page was also looking good, both standing still — he looks stronger than he did at the end of last season — and driving to the basket and using a pull-up jumper we didn’t see much last year.

And then there are the newcomers. Karron Johnson and Jarred Shaw, the two signees with eligibility issues, were not on campus as of last week, and on Wednesday, Reger Dowell wasn’t around because of other commitments.

But point guards, Ray Penn and Fred Gulley, power forward Roger Franklin and big man Torrin Walker were all in attendance.

Gulley could easily be described as a miniature Terrel Harris — he has the same lanky body type, but he’s about six inches shorter than the former Cowboy. He does appear to have the same athleticism and quickness, getting to a couple rebounds out of nowhere. He also defends well and appears to truly enjoy playing defense.

Penn is eager to learn. He’s outgoing, chatting away to trainers and graduate assistants about the game when he was sitting on the sideline. Franklin was defending Moses, and held his own, for the most part.

Walker, who has gotten good reviews from current players and other spectators, can get out and run and showed some range, knocking down a 12-footer in addition to a couple shots closer to the basket.

"I like the new guys,” senior Obi Muonelo said. "Some good players there.”

Anderson, who continues to come out of his shell, agreed.

"I really like them,” Anderson said, then added a pointed comment. "They play hard.”
