They do have a better game day atmosphere and traditions.
BUT.......
Phog Allen is a complete dump. Its got to be the ugliest gym in the country .

Man, I don't know about that. GIA, in the recent heydey of early Eddie, was really special. I've been to the Phog and think it's fantastic. They roll out, are good at recognizing the moment, and have tons of tradition. But give me 6,381 packed in like sardines and blowing the roof off any day. I still love GIA as it is now, but it's not as much as the smaller version, atmosphere-wise.

They said the capacity was doubled in 1987, but I think that is wrong. I thought it was the 2000 expansion that doubled the capacity. I remember going to games in 98-00 that were in the small capacity and then going to games from 01-02 in the larger capacity.

After renovations in 1987, the name became Gallagher-Iba Arena, as late head coach Henry Iba joined the tribute. Although the arena was more than doubled in size, the original maple floor was preserved, and those historical boards are still in use today. These two lines would lead one to believe there was just one remodeling, but there were two. The first was in 1987 which involved new seats and a new name. The second began in 1999 which added more seats and the new roof.

I went to the OSU / KU game this year.
Phog Allen is old, but it's as loud as anything I've been to including new/old GIA and Bud Walton when Arkie was good.
Their students are well organized in terms of cheering, their band is loud and the building packs in 16K although it's much smaller than GIA (80% bleacher seating at the Phog). They also have an awesome sound system which you can make out the words of the announcer. Sometimes, I don't have a clue what Larry Reece is saying in GIA.
It's intimate, but in the Wrigley field sort of way. I love GIA, and wouldn't trade it for anything, but I have no problem conceding to the Phog after going there for a game. The funny thing is, afterward, I overheard a student talking to a buddy about how quiet things were at that game. I almost had to cover my ears a few times.
