Cowboys turn frigid in second half and lose to Iowa State.
AMES, Iowa -- Oklahoma State, in pursuit of its first road victory in nearly two years, led by as many as 10 points Saturday against Iowa State.
Then the Cowboys' shooting got as frigid as the subzero weather outside Hilton Coliseum.
OSU matched a season-low with 26 second-half points and shot 30 percent from the field after halftime in a 73-66 defeat, extending a road losing streak to 16 consecutive games.
"We couldn't move the ball," OSU coach Sean Sutton said.
"The first half we had good flow and had good ball movement and shot 51 percent. We scored 40 points in the first half and did it really without getting to the free throw line very much. In the second half, our ball movement wasn't as good. And we've got to make shots. When we get open shots, we've got to knock them down."
Sutton then changed subjects in mid-quote, saying the big difference was that Iowa State got to the free throw line 33 times (most by an OSU opponent this season) and the Cowboys shot a season-low 13, including four after technical fouls. The Pokes' minus-20 free throw deficit was their largest since being minus-20 at Nebraska last season.
OSU, 10-7 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 games, will return home for an ESPN Big Monday game against Texas. Iowa State jumped to 12-6 and 1-2.
"That's a really good win for us," Cyclones coach Greg McDermott said. "We haven't been in a situation where we trailed by double digits and found a way to come back."
OSU gave up a double-digit lead in a defeat for the first time this season. Obi Muonelo scored inside to give the Cowboys a 33-23 cushion with 7:12 left in the first half. Iowa State retaliated with nine consecutive points.
Byron Eaton hit a buzzer-beating trey that allowed OSU to take a five-point advantage to the halftime locker room. That should have sent momentum to the Cowboy bench, right?
Instead, the Pokes missed nine of their next 10 shots and managed one field goal on their first 13 possessions after halftime.
The Cowboys dug out of a seven-point hole and had a chance to tie the game when Terrel Harris (who has accumulated 40 points the last two games) missed a 3-point attempt in the final minute.
Iowa State pulled away by making six consecutive free throws in the final 31 seconds. The Cyclones made a season-high 27 free throws in 33 attempts and are 52-of-70 in their last two home games, both victories.
