COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Andrea Riley made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 7 seconds left and No. 18 Oklahoma State scored the final 12 points in a 61-58 win over No. 19 Texas A&M on Saturday.
Riley, who scored 29 points, held the ball as the shot clock ticked down. She hit the shot just before the clock ran out to put OSU (16-1, 4-0 Big 12) on top. As she excitedly ran to midcourt after the basket, her teammates jumped up and down and cheered.
"We set up for her take the shot," OSU coach Kurt Budke said. "I didn't know she was going to take it 8 feet behind the line. We were going to live and die with what she shot. She felt it from there and she shot it."
The Aggies had a chance to tie it, but A'Quonesia Franklin's 3-pointer fell short.
Texas A&M (13-5, 1-3) trailed by five at halftime, but built a nine-point lead with 6:26 remaining. Riley ended the game, shocking the Aggies. But it wasn't easy for her all night.
"It wasn't her best night by any means (9-of-22 from field). But what she doesn't do now that she did in the past, is get down on herself when she isn't scoring."
Budke said even when Riley was going 0-for-6, he didn't worry.
"She's not going to quit," he said. "Texas A&M wears you down. There aren't too many teams in the Big 12 who play defense like they do. I'm just proud as can be of our kids. To go to their house and pull off a win, I couldn't be happier."
Budke admitted he was surprised at the 48-27 edge the Cowgirls had in rebounding.
"I never thought we would outrebound them like we did," he said. "But I tell you, our kids believed we could beat them. They thought after the way we lost twice last year (in the final three-tenths of a second), we could beat them."
