UNT to get nearly $1 million to play Georgia
North Texas probably won't go between the hedges in 2013 and leave Georgia's Sanford Stadium with a victory.

The Mean Green will have a nice consolation prize (http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/drc/sports/stories/drc_unt-georgia_0602.3cfb9a14.html) as the Denton Record-Chronicle reports. North Texas will receive $975,000 for the football game, a record payday by Georgia to any non-conference opponent, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The practice happens all the time but seldom do the numbers get this high. North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal tried to make the case that it wasn't all about the money.

"I have worked for programs that cut their teeth by going to places and beating teams in games like this one," Villarreal said. "TCU beat Oklahoma while I was there. At Southern Miss, we beat Auburn and Alabama. You want to build your program that way. Look at what Boise State has done." http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews....play-geor.html (http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/06/unt-to-get-nearly-1-million-to-play-geor.html)

Ouch... looks like OSU won't be signing too many one-n-done contracts... looks like we're relegated to signing 2-for-1, and visiting ULaLa every once in a while.

Well, I guess North Texas will be $1,000,000 closer to that new stadium they've been hoping for down in Denton. Actually it will be much less than that after expenses.

Actually, it is good news for teams like Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton And Florida International in Miami. New D1 schools have to get into black ink as soon as they can to keep the state legislature happy. They actually planned on getting fairly large payouts for away games, knowing they would get their duffs handed to them, until their programs became strong enough to survive on home games. In this case, the mean Green might just become a known as another Troy (SEC teams do not like to schedule anymore). Price of poker just went up a notch.. Go Cowboys!!

actually, it's not good news for most programs, or for college football.

You will now see lots and lots more teams cancelling their contracts with teams like OSU, to sign for the big-bucks somewhere else.

You will see teams scrambling to find a replacement at the last minute; much like what happend to OU a year or so back (they ended up with some Horrid Middle Tech team).

Serioulsy folks; there is nothing good about this.

Just another reason for the Big 12 to go with Coach Gundy's suggestion to have a 11 game Big 12 round robin and have only 1 non-conf game.
