Volunteers QB Crompton: 'It tested me'

ESPN.com news services
Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton apparently felt some significant heat of his own last year as the Volunteers lost seven games for only the second time in the program's history, a season that saw the ouster of 17-year coach Phillip Fulmer.
Crompton received at least two e-mailed death threats during his junior season, the player told the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The problem was brought to his parents' attention after a package they received had slanderous messages scrawled on the box.
"That's when my parents started talking about it," Crompton said, according to the newspaper.
Crompton said he never reported the threats to the school.
He also stayed quiet when he began to receive harassing phone calls after his cell number was made public on the Internet.
"It was tough, I'm not going to lie," he said. "When you're faced with adversity, your true character comes out -- as a person, as a student, as a Christian.
"It tested me."
The Volunteers replaced Fulmer with Lane Kiffin in November, two days after they ended the 5-7 season with a victory over Kentucky.
Kiffin offered a vote of confidence for Crompton, who finished last season with 889 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions on 51.5 percent passing.
"Jonathan has done a great job with the transition," Kiffin said in an e-mail to the News Sentinel. "He's taken a very professional approach to learning and studying the offense.
"I'm not concerned about previous play at any of our positions, including quarterback. Jonathan did a great job in the spring and we look forward to continued improvement."

Maybe if he had been born and bread in Tenn. he wouldn't have gotten those threats on his life. Oh, the perils of being an adult amateur athlete. Maybe it's a good thing that he wasn't being paid what he was worth to the school. The nuts would probably have killed him over being paid for what they considered poor performance.

At the rate that Kiffin is going it will be him receiving the death threats before the season is over.
A lot of the Tennessee fans are/were not happy with his selection as a coach and have not been happy with his verbal tirades since that time.
I have heard that some of the players were considering transfer after the spring practice? Just a rumor I am sure but you never know.

What losers call up a college kid and make death threats over something like a win/ loss record.... in all of life's perils and problems... they really want to get the most angry about one bad year in football.. wow
As far as I am concerned this is a dead issue...
Sorry couldn't help it. :cool2:

Tenn. isn't the only "fan base" that can be threatening. We've had our share of that sort of b.s. in our State, and from our "fan base". I guess it doesn't take much for someone that is a little weird to start with to become very weird over sports events. Just look at the attacks on individuals on different message boards over differences of opinion. I have a distinct impression that many of those that harass others on sports boards are people of low self-worth and have probably never played organized sports

And here's hoping we aren't talking about "our own" after we become a nationwide sensation this fall. I think our fans are as good as any around, but even our own can be over the top when we finally have something to crow about. Hell, I was guilty as hell through the Schnellinberger/Blake years :)

Those were good times. That indiscretion will certainly be excused on the basis that they asked for it.
I will always remember uo trying to copy OSU with their hires of black head coach and a twin brother.

Rob Ryan
Rob was defensive coordinator for Oklahoma State from 1997-99. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders.
Rob Ryan and Rex Ryan were born in Ardmore, Okla. They are the sons of NFL defensive coaching legend Buddy Ryan. They played football together at Southwestern Oklahoma State Univ.
Cowboys defense continually ranked among the best in the nation. [Rob] was named Coordinator of the Year by The Sporting News in 1997.
In 1999, they were ranked 10th in the nation in total defense. In 1998, they were second in the nation with 41 sacks. In his first season at Oklahoma State, the Cowboys defense finished among the nation's top-20 in turnover margin, rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense, allowing just 302.7 yards per game. It was an over 100-yard improvement per game from the year before and helped the Cowboys produce an 8-4 mark and an Alamo Bowl berth.http://www.raiders.com/Team/CoachBio.aspx?id=548
