I guess I'm kinda disappointed in this. Instead of taking the TNG cast and moving ahead with the series, they've decided to "remake" the original with an all new cast including new actors playing James T Kirk, Scotty, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, etc.
Man, I HATE remakes of TV shows. Despite being a huge fan of all things Star Trek, I can't say that I'm looking forward to this one.

If it is done right, I think it will be very good. I know Nimoy is supposed to be actually in the movie, so I don't know if it is him telling a wayback story or what. They are also supposed to revive some little used characters that were important to the ST story, like Christopher Pike. Winona Ryder is going to be Spock's mom. It is being done by JJ Abrams (Lost, Cloverfield, Alias).

There's a preview for this movie if you go see cloverfield. I don't think it shows very much though. Just them constructing the Enterprise w/ a voice over about space etc. The cast has been a little suspect IMO.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Supposedly we find out how Kirk cheated the Kobayashi Maru test in Starfleet by sleeping with a girl who had access to the test, and was able to rig it for him.

We already knew he cheated.

Yes, but know we know how he cheated.
Haven't seen it yet, just read a bunch of fan reviews that's how I knew about the preview. It makes sense what w/ JJ being involved w/ both movies.

I understand what you are saying Pokevette, but the actors are getting too old for a new movie. What are they going to do -- fight the Klingons with canes and tubes of Dentugrip? (I was referring to the original Star Trek cast not the TNG cast. Maybe the TNG cast wants to move on and not do anymore movies) This is a way to continue the series by starring new actors, younger actors. I suspect this whole cast will be in a new Star Trek movie in three to four years.
By the way, the reviews of Cloverfield suck or Cloverfield sucks. I'm not sure I am going now.

Cloverfield has 76% rating by rottentomatoes, so the reviews are generally pretty good so far.

I think it depends on who you ask. I've read lots of good reviews about it. I think I will love it, but I'm sure my mom would hate it. If the trailer peaked your interest, and you know this Genre of film falls into your wheelhouse then I think you have to go see it. You may think it could've been better, but you are glad you saw it, (I felt like that about I AM LEGEND).
In short trust your own judgement.

It's not a "remake" of the original. It's more of a "prequel" with the individual characters still in the academy.
