No letdown

Cowgirls follow up win over Sooners with rout of Mizzou

Ryan Steele - NewsPress

It took Oklahoma State about 10 minutes to eliminate the possibility of a letdown.

Coming off one of the biggest wins in program history, the 18th-ranked Cowgirls responded with a 76-41 rout of Missouri on Wednesday in front of 2,927 fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was the Tigers’ lowest-scoring output since recording 37 against Kansas in 1999.

OSU improved to 15-1 overall — marking the best 16-game start in school history — and is 3-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1997-98. Last weekend, the Cowgirls snapped a 17-game Bedlam losing streak with an 82-63 upset win against then-No. 6 Oklahoma in front a record crowd of 13,611.

Another dominant performance Wednesday left Mizzou coach Cindy Stein wondering why there were so many empty seats.

“Is there something else going on in Stillwater?” Stein asked. “This is the best show in town. I don’t get it. Is it movie night? Oklahoma State is a very talented team. They deserve a lot more people every night, not just for (OU).

“If they can get a good crowd in here every night, and not saying 3,000 is not, but it would be amazing what they could do. The kids feed off the crowd and it could be an amazing environment here.”

Though the Tigers missed nine of their first 12 shots, they only trailed by a point, 10-9, after Alyssa Hollins connected on a three-pointer midway through the first half. O-State then went on a 12-3 run and held a 40-21 advantage at intermission.

Junior Taylor Hardeman scored five straight points for the Cowgirls at the start of the second half, and Mizzou didn’t hit its first field goal of the period until the 15:38 mark. OSU held the Tigers to 25.4-percent shooting and outrebounded them, 54-28.

“We were ready to get out there especially because everyone said (the victory against OU) was kind of a fluke,” said O-State senior Danielle Green. “We were ready to get out there and prove we can do it again and that we weren’t just on an emotional high. We just wanted to play.”

OSU coach Kurt Budke added, “I didn’t think we were very sharp (Wednesday). I think the kids honestly were pretty much emotionally spent from the big win (against the Sooners). It’s hard to get away from what a great night that was.”

Sophomore Andrea Riley, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week who scored a career-high 45 points against OU, led the Cowgirls with 19 points and four assists Wednesday. Riley went down with 15:13 left and had to be helped off the floor, but she returned to action at the 14:16 mark.

“She’s a big, huge part of our team and we know she’s going to be all right,” Green said. “If she had one leg, she’d be out there.”

Hardeman tied a season-high with 16 points, Green added 14 and senior Maria Cordero chipped in with 12. Junior Shyvon Spears posted a game-high 11 rebounds and five blocks for the Cowgirls, who are 11-0 on their home floor this season.

For Mizzou (8-8, 1-2), which played only its second true road game of the year, Jessra Johnson scored 13 points and Amanda Hanneman added 10.

OSU’s brutal conference schedule continues Saturday when it meets No. 19 Texas A&M in College Station at 1 p.m. in a contest that will be televised on Fox Sports Net. The Aggies — the preseason favorites to win the Big 12 — edged 25th-ranked Colorado, 72-68, on the road Wednesday.

The Cowgirls have never been 4-0 in league play.

“I think we’re getting the most out of our talent,” Budke said. “We are not the most talented team in this league, but we are a team that understands roles right now and understands what they have to do to play and for us to be successful.”

The town of stillwater and students should be able to generate 8,000 fans for 2 hours of entertainment at 8 bucks a person. Of course, its free for the students with the all sports pass.

Not dissin people though. 3,000 is good for Missouri when you think that 2 weeks ago it would have been 1,100. Keep winning, keep promoting it in town, and more locals should show.

I think there would have been at least 500 more fans there if the weather had been better.
