There was an interesting story in the Kansas City Star this morning about the concerns of faculty representatives concerning a potential college football playoff.

This esteemed group has deemed that there shouldn't be a football playoff because it would drag the football season into two semesters, putting the athletes in harm's way because of the preponderance of exams that would be taking place during the playoffs.

"Almost uniformly there is little acknowledgement that football in Division I-A is played by student-athletes who are expected to attend school, write papers, work on projects, take exams and do what other students on campus have to do," Josephine Potuto, a University of Nebraska law professor and chair of the Division I-A Faculty Athletics Representatives, told the Star.

The group created a position paper which elucidates its concerns.

It also should be noted that Potuto's group serves as a liason between schools and athletic departments and represents schools before the NCAA in conference concerns and eligibility issues.

This group wants to remind us that "student-athlete" is a part of the collegiate experience.

Which is noble, but still a little misguided.

Consider that nearly every other major NCAA sport transpires over two semesters.

And the concerns about how football playoffs would intrude into the semester are correct, but they already do in the NCAA basketball playoffs, the national volleyball championships and others.

I've got to believe if there ever is a final push for a college football playoff, the concerns of the faculty will be acknowledged with a pat on the head and quickly forgotten.

Because the powers that be in the sport will make their decision determined by what will generate the most money rather than any concern for the athletes.

It won't happen anyway.

Just the shear number of athletes involved in Foobtall, as compared to Basketball or Volleyball, should be enough to make this reporters comments look foolish.

When you're talking about 10-20 kids at a school, versus over 100 kids, it become much more apparent that the impact of crossing semesters could be disasterous for FB.

IMHO.

Then start school in September and end the first semester in January like they use to, and end the second semester near the end of May.
