STILLWATER — Oklahoma State fans, if you enjoyed watching one of your players getting picked in the first round of the NFL Draft on Saturday, next year will be twice as nice.
Three of the first eight picks Saturday were left tackles. Nine wide receivers were drafted in the first two rounds, more than any other position.
Translation: 2010 could be among the best drafts in Oklahoma State football history, thanks to tackle Russell Okung and receiver Dez Bryant.
Okung was being discussed as a first-day pick this year, maybe on the fringe of the first round, until he announced his intention to remain at OSU for his senior season.
Bryant will be just a junior this fall, but ESPN Draft guru Mel Kiper has already labeled him the top receiver prospect for the 2010 draft, and had he been eligible, he probably would have been a first-rounder this weekend.
Assuming Bryant jumps to the NFL after the season, the Cowboys should be looking at a pair of first-round NFL Draft picks for just the third time in history.
It first happened in 1947 with Bob Fenimore and Neill Armstrong, then came again in 1989 with Barry Sanders and Hart Lee Dykes.
On top of Okung and Bryant, the Cowboys should have at least one more draft choice next April. Cornerback Perrish Cox has an NFL body, solid coverage skills and dangerous return ability, which is a combination that catches the eyes of pro scouts.
New defensive coordinator Bill Young has already given Cox an endorsement, saying he believes the senior from Waco, Texas, has an NFL future.
Zac Robinson will be an intriguing prospect to watch. Not a pro-style quarterback, Robinson will have to show scouts he has an NFL arm. His leadership and intangible qualities will grade well with NFL people.
Considering a guy like former Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee was drafted in Sunday’s fourth round, Robinson has hope.
A few other Pokes could be on the fringe of the draft, like linebacker Andre Sexton, though he’ll find himself back at safety in the league.
Nose guard Swanson Miller, because of his athletic ability at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, could jump into the mix with a good senior year. Of course, there are a few guys who fall into the "with a good senior year” category.
But go ahead and chalk up Okung and Bryant — if he goes — as first-round prospects a year from now.
