Pettigrew stays put at O-State

By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy was the recipient of good news. On Monday, All-Big 12 tight end Brandon Pettigrew decided to remain with the Cowboys for his senior season.

A 6-foot-6, 260-pound junior from Tyler, Texas, Pettigrew had been considering early entry in the NFL Draft. Tuesday is the deadline for underclassmen to make their draft decision. College players become draft-eligible after they are three years removed from high school.

“I thought there was a 50-50 chance that Brandon would leave, but then this year’s draft became so saturated with juniors,” Gundy said. “For next year, I label Brandon as a can’t-miss first-rounder. The way he has developed the last two years, I really expect him to develop even more and become a first-round pick.

“Look at the signing bonuses for first round guys. You’re talking about several million dollars, compared to maybe a thirdrounder who gets $600,000 or $700,000.”

During the 2007 season, Pettigrew had 35 catches for 540 yards and four touchdowns. His highlight plays occurred in the fourth quarter of wins over Texas Tech (a 54- yard touchdown) and Kansas State (a 39-yard score).

Pettigrew turned down an interview request on Monday, but he was quoted in an OSU press release as saying, “I want to continue to get better and I want to keep working toward my degree in economics. One more year at OSU can only help me.”

In OSU’s Insight Bowl triumph over Indiana, Pettigrew had three receptions for 39 yards. His career totals stand at 70 catches for 978 yards and nine touchdowns, and Gundy says Pettigrew is equally effective as a blocker.

“There’s a reason we run those option plays with Zac Robinson. It’s because Brandon generally knocks his guy on the ground,” Gundy said.

“Everybody says, ‘Wow, Zac is fast; nobody is near him.’ Well, that’s because the defensive guy who was supposed to contain the play was knocked down by Brandon.

“In the bowl game, we faced a guy (Indiana defensive end Greg Middleton) who led the nation with 16 sacks. (Pettigrew) just mauled that guy. Brandon is a warrior and a great leader. He will make as much of an impact as a leader as he will as a player.”

ESPN wants OSU-A&M date change

Oklahoma State officials are considering an ESPN proposal that would result in a date switch for next season’s Texas A&M-OSU football game in Stillwater. Currently scheduled as the Big 12 opener on Saturday, Oct. 4, the game would be played on Thursday night, Oct. 2.

As of Monday night, athletic director Mike Holder said OSU had not decided whether to make the move. If the game is played on Oct. 2, it would follow by five days the Cowboys’ home meeting with Troy. Last season, at Troy, Ala., the Trojans defeated OSU 41-23.

Absolutely AGAINST moving home games to THURSDAY nights. What a way to ruin crowd support, enthusiasm, and tail gaiting.

I couldn't agree more, leave it on Saturday.

I would hope that Holder wouldn't sell us out and move it to Thursday night, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Maybe a Friday night, but definitely NOT Thursday.

Why does it always seem that it is an OSU HOME game when these changes are proposed?

Why not change the game at Texas this year to a Thursday night game? I'm sure the Whorns wouldn't even entertain that notion.

The reason is that it gets us on national TV and ESPN knows we don't get that as often as a Texas or OU. I am torn but would prefer to leave it on saturday as 5 days is to short a turnaround after Troy and having to prepare for ATM...

Not to mention that playing on a week night basically robs us of our home field advantage. Looks like a lose/lose proposition to me.

And that ability will make Brandon Pettigrew go high in the draft next year. TE's are out there that can catch the ball and make yards after the catch, BUT not as many of them can do that PLUS lay an awesome block on every play of the game if they need too.

Definitely excited about him coming back for his Senior year.

And Thursday night games suck. Anyone looked to see who aTm plays the week before us? I also hope they nix this idea.

Don't do it Holder. Five day turn around isn't enough, especially for a Big 12 opener.

I think we will because we want to keep the favorable relationship we have with E$PN right now. I'm not sure why, but OSU seems to be one of their faves. We have had several early Thurs/Fri night games in recent years, they helped broker the UGA and WSU deals and made them their opening weekend primetime games, they promised us more appearances due to the UGA contract and we got the Troy game on tv, they helped in the Ark St tv deal, the UCLA game in LA was the west coast/midwest ABC opening game and our game at Nebraska was the year before that.

Also, we do not know if the network is offering any incentives to us.

i don't really mind an away game that is on a thursday or friday night, but most definitely not a home game. we've already got yet another bone-headed road opener this season - let's not mess with any of our home games.

They play Army at home the game before us. I would normally call this an easy game but the last time Army was in College Station they almost pulled off the upset...

Guess I'm the only one if favor of this.

But then again, mid-week trips are so much easier than weekend ones for me...

moving the game to Thurs is an easy NO.

nobody will show up on a Thursday... we have a new stadium that we're trying to fill, and we're going to show it empty on TV just to make a few bucks.

If they move the game I probably won't renew my season tickets... I have a hard enough time making it to the games, I don't need Holder making it absolutely impossible for me to make it.

That game was in the Alamo Dome not CS.
