As Oklahoma State seems determined to gain immediate defensive improvement, five linebackers are among the 10 recruits who are visiting the Stillwater campus this weekend.
The linebackers are highly regarded Patrick Trahan of Northwest Mississippi Community College, J.R. Bryant of Garden City (Kan.) Community College, Alonzo Whaley of Madisonville (Texas) High School, Alfred Dupree of Dallas Skyline High School and Donald Booker of Navarro Junior College in Texas.
Five of the 10 visiting recruits already have announced their commitment to sign with the Cowboys. They are Dupree, defensive end Jeremy Gray of Sherman (Texas) High School, tight end Justin Horton of Henderson (Texas) High School, offensive tackle Dajuan Davis of Crowley (Texas) High School and guard Lane Taylor of Martin High School in Arlington, Texas.
Scout.com's highest rating for any prospect is five stars. Dupree is rated a four-star prospect, while the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Trahan is a five-star recruit.
As a freshman at Auburn in 2006, Trahan played in 13 games. He reportedly was the Tigers most productive linebacker during the 2007 spring-practice period, but was declared academically ineligible and wound up transferring to Northwest Mississippi Community College. At Northwest Mississippi, Trahan was voted a junior college All-American after totaling a team-high 96 tackles, along with six sacks.
Trahan, a product of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, says Arkansas and Southern Miss have offered a scholarship. He is scheduled to visit Ole Miss next week.
Cooking for the Cowboys: His ambition to become a chef was a significant factor when Nigel Nicholas announced his commitment to OSU last week.
Nicholas, of Rossville, Ga., seemed close to committing to Duke, but visited Stillwater last month, was impressed by O-State's culinary arts program and made the decision to sign with the Cowboys next month.
The 6-4, 253-pound Nicholas originally was recruited to play tight end, but Cowboy coaches have asked him to work initially at defensive end. Nicholas agreed to the switch, indicating that he would prefer to play defense.
Nicholas also is a quality basketball player, averaging 12 points and 15 rebounds for his Ridgeland High School team.
Martin arrives: Safety Markelle Martin, rated a three-star national recruit out of Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, originally was committed to Texas A&M. After Aggie coach Dennis Franchione resigned, Martin switched his commitment to Oklahoma.
In spite of his commitment to OU, Martin decided to visit Oklahoma State. Apparently, it was a positive visit. Having graduated from high school at the semester break, Martin already is enrolled at OSU and will participate in spring drills.
