STILLWATER — By the end of the 2002 season, Bill Young's first as the Kansas defensive coordinator, the Jayhawks were 112th nationally in total defense and 114th against the run.
Three years later, Kansas was 11th in total defense and third in rushing defense.
Can Young execute the same turnaround at Oklahoma State?
"You don't get well overnight when you're really bad, and I certainly don't think we're bad here," said Young, OSU's new defensive coordinator. "I just think that we're going to work as hard as we can and get good as fast as we can."
Young becomes OSU's fifth defensive coordinator during this decade.
The 2008 Cowboys were 93rd nationally in total defense and 109th in pass defense. Zac Robinson, Dez Bryant and Kendall Hunter return to an offense that last season averaged 41 points and 488 yards per game. If Young can find a way to push the Cowboys from 93rd in total defense to somewhere in the 50-60 range, OSU — with eight home games — would seem positioned to make a run at its first 10-win season since 1988.
The first steps toward redefining the defense will be taken during the spring-practice period, which begins with Monday's open-to-the-public session at 3:30 p.m. OSU practices on the grass fields immediately east of Gallagher-Iba Arena.
While the Cowboy offense has been prolific for three seasons, the defense has been stuck in a rut of sub-standard performance. Since 2002, OSU has not had a total-defense ranking of better than 74th.
Young played at OSU in 1965-67 and coached Cowboy linemen in 1976-78. He returned to OSU after one year as the Miami (Fla.) defensive coordinator.
With Young, the Hurricanes were 28th in total defense and seventh in pass defense. He inherits an OSU defense that lost three starters in the secondary and lacks depth.
Explaining his philosophy, Young said, "Escape blocks, go chase the football and get there in a bad humor. That's what defense is all about. We want to play winning defense — whatever that takes."
Spring practice dates
All practices are conducted at Boone Pickens Stadium or on the practice fields immediately east of Gallagher-Iba Arena:
March: 9 (3:30 p.m., open to the public), 11 (3:30 p.m., open to the public), 13 (3:30 p.m., (open to the public), 24, 25, 27, 30.
April: 1, 3 (3:30 p.m., open to the public), 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 18 (6 p.m., Orange-White game).
