Big 12 Tournament today

OU, OSU to benefit from new NCAA qualifying system.

No matter what happens in Saturday's Big 12 wrestling tournament, three wrestlers from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are already assured of a trip to the NCAA Tournament in two weeks.

For some Sooners and Cowboys, though, Saturday's conference meet in Lincoln, Neb., is the last chance to earn a trip to nationals in St. Louis.

The newly implemented national tournament qualification process the NCAA is using this season likely will benefit the five Big 12 schools that wrestle more than previous years. The conference has been allocated 37 automatic qualifying spots and could earn a few more qualifiers when the NCAA wrestling committee makes its at-large selections on Wednesday.

In previous years, the top-three finishers at all 10 weight classes from the Big 12 meet automatically qualified for the NCAA Tournament. After the Big 12 meet, the five league coaches met behind closed doors for an hour or so to decide the six to eight wild-card berths from the league.

"It was a bloody process," OU coach Jack Spates said of the past wild-card meetings. "I won't miss those meetings at all."

For Spates and OSU coach John Smith, their objective Saturday is to get as many of their wrestlers qualified for the national tournament. Iowa State is the prohibitive favorite to win its third consecutive league title. With Nebraska and Missouri ranked higher, the Sooners and Cowboys are trying to battle to avoid last place.

Both state coaches, though, believe they can get at least eight NCAA qualifiers. Their wrestlers in the 165, 197 and heavyweight divisions are set for St. Louis.

Spates said the new qualification system is extremely fair because it impartially examines a wrestler's entire season. But there is still work to be done Saturday in Lincoln, Smith said.

"I do believe this is momentum time, and you don't want to be thinking anything different other than creating momentum," Smith said.

"We need to be ready and we need to look forward to winning."

Silver (149), Erisman (157), Mason (165), McNeill (184), and Foster (197) all won the pigtail #4 vs #5 match this morning.

I found it odd that McNeill was in after not having seen him wrestle almost all semester. I guess he was injured maybe? I never heard.

Blanc loses 4-3. Not a good camera angle, so I couldn't tell if it there was a takedown at the end or not, but it was close.

No. In fact, we've never finished 4th. Our least amount of points for a tourney was last year with 52.5.

What are next year's prospects, recruiting, etc.? I saw there were four(?) kids that were four-time state champs; how many of them are OSU bound (recall at least two are)?

Why is OSU saying the Cyclones won and Nebraska was second?

Iowa State narrowly won the team title with Nebraska finishing second and Missouri third. Nebraska 197-pounder Craig Brester was the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.http://www.okstate.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=200&ATCLID=3687409

For the first time in school history, the Cyclones have won at least a share of three-straight conference team titles.http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=46632&SPID=4248&DB_OEM_ID=10700&ATCLID=3686620

Is this the first time OSU has not had a conference champion?

We have won 8 out of 13 tourneys with the last being in 2006.

Recruiting wise, we have probably the top ranked class in the country coming in next year including Chris Perry. We also have 2 great wrestlers that we redshirted this year in Jordan Oliver and Alex Meade.

Next year will be another rebuilding year that may turn out to be a nice year, but 2 years from now we should be back squarely at the top and be solid for a few years.
