I understand that statistically our defense was worse than in 2006, but I found it interesting when comparing the two years that the biggest difference (in total yards allowed; which is the ranking that everybody qoutes), seems to be due to more plays by the opponents, rather than any other gaping failure.

Yards per rush allowed was only .2 more, yard per catch was only .5 more, and yards per play was only .3 more.

Accordingly, the number of plays by the opponent went up from 845 in 2006, to 972 in 2007. (130 total plays is about two games worth, or so)

I'm not quite sure why they had more total plays in 2007. Opponents converted more 3rd downs in 2007, but it doesn't seem that significant statistically.

Anybody have any thoughts on these numbers? I'm a bit baffled at the moment.

Well we gave up 295 first downs in 07 and 256 first downs in 06. That along with the 11 extra third down conversions is probable a lot of it.

(I haven't look at it in detail, just thinking out loud here)

Could that mean that while we gave up about the same yards, we made them take more plays to cover those yards?

In other words, did we give up more "chunk plays" in 2006 compared to "grind it out" drives in 2007?

If so, that would seem to actually be a good thing?

Wasn't there a rule change before the season that affected the clock....? I will have to check that out, but it seems like after one of the Coaches Conferences last spring, Gundy was concerned about the effect a particular rule change would have on the tempo of the game. I'll have to go check out what that was...unless one of our pigskin-einsteins can post what it was faster than I can look it up.

It might be interesting to compare the number of turnovers we had to see if that influenced the numbers. On the offensive side I felt like we decreased the Turnovers versus '06 but my impression, could easily be wrong, was we did not generate as many from our defensive side. For example in the bowl game, I do not recall a single TO by Indiana but we had at least 2.

Comparing the defenses year over year.
DL in '06 we had 1 future NFL draft choice, a SR Nose Tackle that was average for the Big 12 and a nice pass rusher in Peterson.
DL in '07 no future NFL draft choices, a new Nose Tackle and a nice pass rusher in Peterson.

We were expecting an improved LB corp in '07 vs '06 but the injuries and rotations made this a push.

Secondary
CB play improved during '07 despite the injury to Van Zant. Safety play was roughly breakeven versus '06.

For next year, it will be critical that our DEs step up and that we solidfy the DT positions.

Yeah, it looks like the rule change made the difference, since total number of plays was higher in 2005, lower in 2006, and backup in 2007.

by the opponents
2005
# of plays: 766 (11 games; 70 ppg; x2 = 140; 906 total for 13 games)
TOP: 32:03

2006
# of plays: 845
TOP: 31:07

2007
# of plays: 972
TOP: 30:18

TURNOVERS: (that OSU gave up)
2005
fumbles: 18
interceptions: 17

2006
fumbles: 10
interceptions: 11

2007
fumbles: 12
interceptions: 10
