OK, here's my situation... I have been offered a job that would bring me back home to Oklahoma, specifically Tinker. The company I would work for is contracted by Tinker to do Natural Resources GIS. My problem is that I can't permanantly move to Oklahoma just yet, so they have offered to let me commute each week until both my wife and I can move permanently, most likely June. The company is picking up 4 round trip plane tickets a month, but will not pick up the lodging. So what I am looking for is either a great deal at a non flea bag hotel or a furnished one bedroom apartment. If anybody has any information or suggestions, or even has a rent house/apartment they want to lease out cheap to help out a fellow Poke, please let me know. I really want to take this job, but if I can't get something for around $500 - $700 a month, I am going to have to turn this down. Most hotels I've talked with are running about $80 - $100 a day. The extended stay places are around $270 a week, but tht's still about $1000 a month. HELP!!!

Thanks all for any help.

my husband has an apartment at Huntington Place Apts, around 10th and Midwest Blvd - 3 or 4 miles from Tinker. They do six month leases - seems like you can get the 1 bedroom for under 350 a month, no utilities. Pretty nice place - much nicer than the last place he was. Gated with pools. Not fancy but clean and well kept.

If you are willing to spend over 400, there is a complex on Reno east of Air Depot that is called Willow Creek. It is on the south side of Reno and is really nice for that area.

There is a really really nice complex called Legacy something at the corner of 10th and Air Depot but I don't think it is enough nicer than say willow creek to justify the rent.

None of those would be furnished though. Could you move one bed, a chair and a card table? Or do what my husband did and hit the cheapo furniture places. Walls sometimes has reasonable mattresses and frames as well as chairs and stuff. The best Walls i know of anywhere is on SE 29th.

Stay away from the Silverwood complex. One big crack den.

as far as by the week hotels in that area, my guess is they are full of icky people anyway. I would try to find an apartment if I could.

My MIL used to have some rent houses in several areas in OKC, so i after i read this, i called her to see if she had anything near your area. She has sold the houses and is no longer in the business.

I would be more than happy to start picking up the OKC paper and start looking in that area for you, if you think that would help?

PS: We can come up with some extra furniture until your wife can get moved here with your stuff. I have a new couch and loveseat that i was looking to sell, and i'd be glad to let you use it.

I had some friends stay at Quail Landing Apartments after their house was hit by a tornado. Its up by Quail Springs Mall on the North side, but right next to the turnpike for easy access to Tinker.

Thanks guys!! I knew I could count on you for good info. I have a couple places in mind. The Highlands off of N Penn up by Quail Springs. Partially furnished 1 bedroom for 670 a month. All I need is a bed, dresser, couch and TV. They can do that for me. I am also looking at a new extended stay off of 240 about 4 miles from Tinker. Value Place. $169.00 a week and all the reviews I have read are pretty positive. Michelle, I may take you up on the offer if none of these pan out. Thanks Allie for the info on where to stay away from. You too Landscape, thanks for the info. I hope to make a decision tomorrow or Thursday.

KP-

You'll be able to find house AND apt rentals ALL DAY LONG for the prices you're talking about. Believe me, this ISN'T a deal breaker. Not by a long shot.

You thinking something close to work and jet noise in MWC or are you open? There's some apts down at Bricktown (Deep Deuce) that will put you in walking/bike ride distance to a lot of food & entertainment action while still only being 10-15 minutes from Tinker.

Here's a link for some apt hunting: link (http://www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/Oklahoma/)

You might consider getting something that will fit your family once they get here and sign a 1 year lease if you have to, then you'll have some time to look for your ultimate stop after the family gets here. Moving twice won't be a blast but you won't be limited to looking for short leases and you'll have some time to think about where in the City you really want to end up.

Another thing that might work for you is to look into just renting a room in someone's home. It's usually very reasonable, and can work out very well for short-term housing.

Try craigslist.org

I love that place!

I'd stear clear of anything on the south side of Quail springs mall. That area I have heard has the highest crime rate in that one square mile than anywhere else in OKC.

Quail Landing is on the northwest side of QSM.

Thanks Landscape. That's where The Highlands is located. RIght off N. Penn at the Turnpike. Thanks for the info.

Dude, anything within about a mile of 122 and Penn is going to be really scary, unless they have really remodeled...Besides, thats kind of a hike to Tinker anyway.

Have you thought about one of those long term hotel room/mini suite rentals?

I think I have seen one in OKC. you can rent by the week or month.
Some I have seen in the past even have a kitchenette. Plus all the benefits of staying in a hotel, No cleaning, No utilities.

Before you jump into a lease & turn on utilities, you might want to check out that option.

When I was doing contract work, a lot of my fellow contracters would go that route & it was much better than rental property.

Well I think I am going to go the route of an extended stay. There's a Value Place over off of 240 about 3 - 4 miles form the base. $169.00 a week and my future boss has stayed there before and said is was alright. Small, but clean and a friendly staff that made sure everything was taken care of if there was a problem. I'm still contemplating the apartment up off of Penn. They will do a four month lease for me, partially furnish the place (I only need a bed, dresser, couch, and TV) for $650 a month. I would only have to pay for electric.

Thanks for all your input guys. I really appreciate it. It has helped out alot. I'll be making a decision tomorrow. My wife is in Weatherford today interviewing at SWOSU for a faculty position. She has an interview next week at OCU and the following week at University of Tulsa. Good choices, but looks like a commute for me on two of the potential destinations. Oh well, you buy cars/trucks to drive don't you? Wish her luck for these next couple weeks.

KP,

I just wanted to put my thoughts in on your situation. That Value Place on I240 is nice. There is also a Value Place on I40 at Scott Street. Stay away from the one on I40. Bad area!!! The Value Place hotels are actually pretty nice. You get a room with a kitchen or kitchenette. They are nice. It's basically just like a 1 bedroom apartment, except you don't have to pay utilities.

Good luck and congrats on the Tinker job. Good luck to your wife in her search for a position as well.

Thanks Shari, that's exactly what I needed to hear about the Value Place. I appreciate the good thoughts for my wife.
