NORMAN -- More than a dozen national political figures remained mostly tight-lipped Sunday night as they arrived at the University of Oklahoma for a bipartisan forum co-hosted by OU President David L. Boren.

Drawing the most attention was New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has been mentioned as a possible independent presidential candidate.

He declined to discuss the upcoming forum at OU. However, his aides had agreed to make Bloomberg available for pictures in front of Boyd House, the president’s home, where guests were having a private dinner on Sunday night.

Former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia, who is co-host of the event, spoke briefly. Asked if he foresees an independent candidate emerging in the presidential race, Nunn said, “It’s not impossible, but that is not what this meeting is all about.”

A close colleague of Boren’s, Nunn said, “This country has had serious problems. And we believe that the country has also let partisanship lead to polarization.”

Described as a centrist and moderate, Democrat Nunn added, “We have to find a way to unwind (partisanship) and get people discussing the fundamental issues and give the next president of the United States a chance to govern successfully.”

In addition to Bloomberg, those expected to be attending include former U.S. Sens. Bill Cohen, a Maine Republican who also served as defense secretary in the Clinton administration; John Danforth, a Missouri Republican; Bob Graham, a Florida Democrat; Chuck Robb, a Virginia Democrat; and Gary Hart, a Colorado Democrat; and former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, a Republican who led the Environmental Protection Agency under the current President Bush.

Following a private breakfast on Monday, members of the group were scheduled to speak publicly at 11 a.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Performing Arts Center in Holmberg Hall on the OU campus.

"What kind of dressing would you like on your salad?" asked the head waiter:
