STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State left tackle Russell Okung will return to Stillwater for his senior year in 2009, he announced today. Okung was a 2008 first-team all-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches and by the Associated Press to go with second-team All-America honors from rivals.com and All-America recognition from Phil Steele and SI.com.

“I’m excited to be part of what is going on at Oklahoma State right now,” Okung said. “We’re going to have an exciting team next year and I look forward to being someone who can help contribute to what we are trying to accomplish. This offseason is important for us and I’m going to do everything I can to help this team get better so we can reach a new level next year.”

Okung has started every game for the Cowboys the last two years and has started 34 consecutive games dating back to the 2006 season for the longest active streak of any Oklahoma State player. Okung has been a key part of the Cowboys ranking in the top 20 nationally in total offense each of the last three years, improving from ranking 16th in 2006 to seventh in 2007 and sixth in 2008.

Great to hear! Russell's development at OSU has been great; here's to him being a very high pick in '09.

Him staying really helps us out ALOT... this is big that we get him back so we can continue to dominate in the trenches..

Losing running backs, wide outs, fullbacks, d-line is tough... but replacing a good O-Lineman or a great QB is extra tough

Him staying will help us, good to hear.

I'm sure the University will pick up a policy for him.

Is that allowed? It sounds like a NCAA violation (extra benefit). I would think that he would pick up his own policy, but is the school allowed to protect a kids professional career?

Oddly enough, it is allowed.

SC did it for Leinart, we did it for Rashaun, UO did it for J. White.

although SC and UO kind of have their own rules committee. :officechair:

That's what I thought... the families pay for the insurance, not the team.

Leinart, who announced last month that he was returning for his senior season of eligibility, played last season covered by a $1-million policy that his father, Bob, purchased for $20,000 through Lloyd's of London.
