STILLWATER -- It appears Johnny Barr will be returning to Oklahoma State for a third time, sources said Thursday.

Barr, who played at Oklahoma, was a Cowboys assistant under Pat Jones when current OSU coach Mike Gundy was the team's quarterback, then he returned to join Bob Simmons' staff in 1995-96.

It is expected that Barr will fill the recruiting coordinator position that came open earlier this week when Gundy promoted Robert Matthews to an on-field position.

A coaching veteran of more than three decades, Barr most recently worked as the director of on-campus recruiting for Texas A&M under former coach Dennis Franchione through the 2007 season.

He has also coached at OU, Texas Tech, Kansas and Arizona State, among other places.

An official announcement is expected from OSU later today announcing the additions of Barr and new running backs coach Robert Gillespie, as well as the promotion of Matthews.

OSU offensive lineman Russell Okung has until midnight tonight to announce whether or not he will return to OSU for his senior season or declare for the NFL Draft. It has been anticipated by those around the program that Okung will return, though no official announcement has been made.

He was certainly an all around football player. Notice that a Stillwater gal caught this Texan's eye.

As a player at Oklahoma, Barr played on two Big Eight Conference championship teams. Oklahoma finished No. 2 in the nation in 1967 and No. 10 in 1968. Barr set three records there, including most touchdown receptions in a bowl game, most receptions in a bowl game and tied the mark for most points scored in a bowl game. He had nine receptions for 138 yards in the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl against Southern Methodist and was selected to the UPI All-Bowl Team as a result. He also set Astro-Bluebonnet records of most receptions in the game, most touchdown passes caught and for most points scored (tied) in the contest.

Barr prepped at Atlanta High School, Atlanta, Texas, from 1963-66. As a quarterback, he was all-state (1965), all-East Texas (1964 and 1965) and all-district (1964 and 1965). As a safety, Barr was all-East Texas (1965) and all-district (1964 and 1965).
Born October 23, 1947, Barr is married to the former Christi Sue Groce of Stillwater, Oklahoma. ... He earned a bachelor's of science degree in 1970 from Oklahoma.
