STILLWATER — Oklahoma State coach Kurt Budke came away from the Cowgirls’ Big 12 opener pleased with everything but small forward production and the one thing he isn’t allowed to talk about.

OSU fell to Iowa State 63-55 in Ames, Iowa, but overall Budke’s reviews were positive.
"I thought we played an outstanding game at Iowa State,” Budke said. "I thought we were really good. I thought defensively it was one of our better games of the year. We held them the last 16 minutes of the (first) half to 9 points — so you can’t ask anybody to do that any better than what we did against Iowa State at their home.”
What Budke couldn’t mention — without a fine from the Big 12 — was the officiating, which played a defining role in the second half. OSU was whistled for 17 fouls in the second half while the Cyclones were called for just two. With 1:24 to play senior, Taylor Hardeman was called for an intentional foul, and then Budke was called for a technical for arguing the call.
"We let things get to us, and we let the crowd get to us,” Hardeman said. "I think that’s kind of why it ended up the way it did.”
OSU will return to its home court tonight to take on Colorado, which lost its opener to Baylor over the weekend.
One area where Budke said he needs improvement is from his small forward duo of Tegan Cunningham and Kristin Hernandez. Cunningham had a tough introduction to the Big 12, going scoreless in 17 minutes, and Hernandez scored just two points off the bench.
"We can’t look up at the end of the night and how many did they have, two?” Budke said. "Tegan didn’t score. We’re not going to win. I think out of that spot we have to have 15 points a night and it wasn’t even close.”
Hardeman said the game in front of 8,036 at Hilton Coliseum was eye-opening for the newcomers.
"(Cunningham) was like, ‘I had no idea it was like this,’ ” Hardeman said. "But I told her it’s OK and she’ll learn. She’ll figure it out, it just takes time.”
