A trim, youthful-looking Sean Sutton attended Tuesday night’s Tulsa-Memphis basketball game. The former Oklahoma State coach said he’s lost 20 pounds since his forced exit in Stillwater last April, and weighs “only eight more pounds than when I played.”
Sutton, who also attended the OU-Texas game on Monday and plans to watch his brother Scott’s ORU team soon, sat on press row at the Reynolds Center. At some point during the game, all three officials – Curtis Shaw, Duke Edsail and Mark Whitehead – stopped by during a break in the action to say hello to Sutton and wish him well.
I told Sutton that the only time coaches and officials like each other is when one of them isn’t working the game.
And when TU coach Doug Wojcik and Memphis boss John Caliari looked totally exhausted and beat up emotionally after the Tigers’ last-second, one-point win, I asked Sean if he really wanted to get back into coaching.
He does. And I’m betting he’ll be back in the game somewhere next season.
In addition to watching the game he loves, Sutton attended the TU-Memphis game because he wanted to visit with former OSU point guard Doug Gottlieb, who was part of the announcing crew that worked the game ESPN.
With 27 scouts from 17 NBA teams on hand to check out TU center Jerome Jordan and Memphis guard Tyreke Evans (among others), I asked Sutton if he'd ever consider the more laid-back life of an NBA scout. He pointed out that scouts are on the road more than coaches.

Gottlieb was on one of the Tulsa call-in shows Tuesday afternoon. I guess he came in early at Eddie's behest and said he'd really had a good time visiting with him and was looking forward to seeing Sean at the TU game.

Glad to see all that "Doug Gottlieb hates the Sutton family" crap being torn to shreds.
