Four questions on OSU football
Published: January 12, 2009

When will Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy begin to fill some of the other vacancies on his coaching staff, other than defensive coordinator?

As for the two offensive assistant positions, Gundy doesn’t necessarily have to get in a big hurry with his timetable to fill them. Because of recruiting restrictions on how many coaches can be on the road recruiting at one time, it isn’t imperative to have a full staff.

Gundy is at the AFCA convention in Nashville, so that presents plenty of opportunities for interviews and other research on candidates.

Recruiting coordinator Robert Matthews is still considered a candidate for one of the openings, possibly as running backs coach, though nothing is certain yet.

Filling the director of operations position isn’t of a pressing nature, because assistant director Dale Patterson is still on staff.

There’s been very little recruiting news the last couple weeks. Is that reason for concern among fans?

Not really. There’s a dead period around the holidays, and a lot of recruits schedule visits during January, right up until signing day Feb. 4.

The Cowboys are hosting plenty of recruits and will have one crucial visitor this weekend. According to multiple Internet reports, Lancaster, Texas, cornerback DeMontre Hurst has scheduled a trip to Stillwater.

Cornerback is a key position in the last few weeks of recruiting, with only one current commitment at the position. The 2008 cornerback depth chart consisted of three juniors and a senior.

What other positions will be important during the final weeks of recruiting?

There are still needs to fill at linebacker and defensive tackle. Indiana high school linebacker Jordan Barnes reportedly visited the campus over the weekend, and the Cowboys have targeted a couple more. Same at defensive tackle, where the Cowboys need to build depth for the future.

Offensively, the most prominent areas will be receiver, where two players from the 2008 roster have been dismissed (Jeremy Broadway and William Cole), and possibly the addition of a second quarterback.

A week removed from the departures of assistant coaches Curtis Luper and Trooper Taylor, has there been a significant impact on recruiting?

Nothing major to this point. Receiver Rueben Randle, rated by Rivals.com as the top player in the country, canceled his scheduled visit to OSU and instead visited Auburn. But it was going to be tough for the Cowboys to sign Randle.

According to OStateIllustrated.com, Taylor and Luper, in their current capacity at Auburn, have contacted several of the players they were recruiting for OSU. But so far, there hasn’t been a visible negative effect of their efforts toward OSU.
