I'm trying to set a ringtone. It says it must be a song purchased from ITunes, but every song that i have purchased says "This song is no longer available for ringtone"...help!

They really are cool! Every one of my friends who have one have been more than pleased with them. One of the complaints is the whole custom ringtone thing. Apparently, you can't just set any full length song as a ringtone. If I understand correctly, you have to 1) buy a song from iTunes then 2) pay to have it converted as a ringtone. Here's the apple FAQ on 'em:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306374

However...it looks like there are some hacks out there to make your own for free. I'm curious if our iphone users will pipe in about how they do it...

It's not just Apple who is going this direction. My current phone is a Sony Ericcson. I just use a regular mp3 file as my ringtone. Easy. The new SE phone that I'm thinking about getting to succeed it won't allow that anymore...you have to buy ringtones. Greedy bastages.

Congrats on your new iPhone. I love mine and have become too addicted to it.

You can download a song from iTunes, then record whatever section you want out of the song for your ringtone.

I can send you some cool links, games and online stuff that works just on the iPhone, if you'd like.

Have fun with it!

The custom ringtone hacks really aren't hacks anymore. If you search the Apple support forum, they say that you can now add custom ringtones the you have created via Apple's Garageband. But, that also means that you can cut up any unprotect piece of music and put it on your iPhone. I don't know what the Windows equivalent is to get this done, but they are out there and your custom ringtones shouldn't get erased anymore when there is a software up date.

Also, if you want to see all of the less publicized things you can do with it, but things that are still supported by Apple, go to Apple's website and watch the tutorials on the iPhone. It is really easy to use it, but there are lots of things buried that you might not otherwise know are there.
