At length and in detail, Gundy addresses issues
1/4/2008 4:33:27 PM

By Bill Haisten
World Sports Writer
During a 40-minute teleconference with reporters on Friday, Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy addressed a variety of subjects:

* On a Dallas Morning News report that quoted Bobby Reid's mother as saying the Cowboy backup quarterback will not return for his senior season in 2008: "I have not talked to Bobby. I would say it is (accurate) because it's got his mom's quote in there, right? I think it's something that everybody kind of anticipated. He did graduate and he finished. I kind of thought that he would play at some professional level or maybe transfer to a lower school. I think it was kind of understood that it was going to happen."

* Gundy on this week's dismissal of OSU defensive line coach Nelson Barnes: "Coach Barnes was let go because we need improvement in the defensive line area. He and I talked about that, and that's a decision I made. Coach Barnes is a good man. He's been very loyal. He worked extremely hard here. Sometimes, it just doesn't work for whatever reason."

* Cowboy tight ends coach Doug Meacham is expected to be named passing-game coordinator, and wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer is expected to be named co-offensive coordinator. Gundy said that process has not been finalized. Tennessee wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor, who two weeks ago was hired to be OSU's co-oiffensive coordinator, arrived in Stillwater on Friday.

* Gundy acknowledged that OSU junior tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who finished the 2007 season with 35 catches for 540 yards, will solicit draft advice from NFL officials. Pettigrew is expected to make a decision – whether to enter the draft or return for his senior season – within two weeks.

* Gundy was asked about his father, Ray Gundy, who following the Insight Bowl, while on the Sun Devil Stadium playing surface, reportedly directed a profanity-laced tirade at Oklahoman columnist Berry Tramel.
On Sept. 22, Mike Gundy fired a now-famous and critical monologue (minus profanity) at Oklahoman columnist Jenni Carlson.
"Any incident like that, I would prefer it not happen," Mike Gundy said. "I'm not going to scold my father or question him. As you guys know, I'm 40 years old and he's still my father. He probably takes some things more seriously than I do. He probably reads and listens and has his opinion. The last time I checked, we have freedom of speech in this country. His speech may have not come across in a proper manner. I didn't hear it. I only got second-hand information.
"I'm sure he feels the same way about me that you guys do about your children. Would I prefer that it not happen? Yeah. But I can't necessarily control the way other people think or act at times. I think it's all overrated. I think everybody needs to relax."

* Gundy discussed his program's relationship with the media.
"I just think it's all going the wrong direction and ultimately it's going to blow up. I have a difficult time of getting my team to talk to the media. They just don't want to talk to them. I don't like that. I would prefer that they talk to the media. I think it's good for their people skills and it's good for the public to have knowledge. There were times with Bowman and Savage and Pettigrew when I said, 'You guys need to go speak with the media.' They won't do it. I can't make them.
"I wish it could be much better than it is. I think sports journalism now has become so opinionated and not as based on fact. Everybody is trying to write a story to try to be controversial. You have more opinionated articles going out, and then you have players and coaches that don't agree with the opinion. They don't feel like the knowledge is enough. Some guys are very knowledgable and write very fair articles that are opinionated. Some guys write articles because they have a vendetta against a player or a coach. When that happens, it creates bad relationships.
"I've been involved with the media since I was 15 years old. Twenty-five years, and I've only had one incident. I've made mistakes, but for the most part I've tried to give the time, give the interviews. I get upset a few times, but not many for 25 years. . . . My little deal with Jenni (Carlson) led to 2 million hits on YouTube. The opinionated articles – that has led to the friction. . . . People just need to put stuff aside the best they can, including myself, so everybody can get along."

* In 2007, in 11 starts, Cowboy quarterback Zac Robinson shattered the single-season school record for total offense. Gundy was asked whether he considers Robinson, who next season will be a junior, a nationally elite quarterback.
"I think Zac is a good football player," Gundy replied. "He's got a long way to go; he needs to develop himself more as a thrower. There were times when guys were open and he didn't hit them. But Zac is very disciplined, tough and has shown leadership skills. The players believe in him. I would not trade him."

* With offensive coordinator Larry Fedora having become the new head coach at Southern Miss, Gundy was heavily involved in game-planning the offense in advance of the Insight Bowl. Gundy called plays during the game. He said on Friday that he will continue to coach quarterbacks next season, and he was asked whether he might call plays on a full-time basis.
"I kind of enjoyed what went on with the bowl preparation and the extra part of it – scripting and being involved in play-calling. I just have to decide whether I can handle it physically and mentally. I don't have that answer yet."

* NCAA rules prohibit Gundy from commenting on or even acknowledging any recruit. Kody Spano, a Stephenville, Texas, quarterback who months ago committed to the Cowboys, now may end up elsewhere. He graduated from high school last month and had planned to attend class in Stillwater during the spring semester.
As of now, no scholarship is available for Spano, so he is exploring the possibility of signing with Nebraska. He briefly considered the University of Tulsa, but has ruled out the Golden Hurricane. Spano has not completely severed ties with Oklahoma State.

Could someone please explain to me why Gundy would go to bat for this kid and then turn around two months later and not even take the time to talk to him about his future? It appears now like he really could care less what happens to Bobby Reid. I'm sorry but a true players coach makes the effort to help guide his players, sounds like he hasn't even tried.

Man you really had to hunt a long time in this article to say something bad about Mike Gundy. That whole article shows that Mike Gundy is very smart and pretty well spoken. I thought Gundy handled every subject in the article very, very well and quite a few of the subjects were a little "touchy".

Gundy is now starting to sound like a knowledgeable and experienced head coach. Very well done on Mike's part!

I think Mike was saying that Bobby has not come to him to talk about the choice, and that is on Bobby to initiate.

pokeinokc is just another example of those who are so infatuated with Reid that they are willing to criticize Gundy and the program in general on behalf of him.

Its a sad situation the way it worked out. We all hoped that Reid would live up to his hype, but he is not the first recruit to fall short. Div. I head coaches are forced every day to put personal feelings aside and make decisions that are for the best of the overall program.

I wish Reid the best in the future. But, I am certain that Robinson is the choice for the future of Cowboy football.

Reid DID NOT fall short of the hype... he got beat out.

A record setting 2006 season is not "falling short".

There is no doubt that he would have had a great season, and would be well up in EVERY OSU QB record statistical category.

I would have been interesting to see what he might have done if we had not changed offenses after his RS season (and the toe injury did not help his development any either).

I see where pokeinokc is coming from. We're watching Gundy learn on the job how to do the head coach thing. It has been frustrating at times both on and off the field (but with some good moments, too). His press conferences have been all over the place, but are starting to get better. For instance, when Collins was about to go to trial, Gundy said something like, "I don't know about his situation, I haven't kept up". A kid on his team was about to go on trial for rape and he says he hasn't kept up? I know he probably did keep up and didn't want to feed the press, but a simple "I can't comment on a player's legal issues" would have been sufficient. Now he's starting learn how communicate a little better, give good information without giving too much away.

I'm not trying to bash Gundy, just pointing out that he's been feeling his way around. It's a tough job, but he's getting better and will do just fine.

What I was referring to was all of the hype that he had the foot speed and elusiveness similar to Vince Young. He was not even close, and even Zach Robinson looks so much quicker than BR. I do believe that Reid has the arm that gives him a chance at the next level, but he will have to improve significantly in his ability to read defenses and make decisions on the go.

And, CC, if BR was as good as advertised, Robinson would not even have been in the picture.

And when I say what I believe, I'm not trashing Reid; I simply don't think he is everything everyone thinks he is. He has never shown anything that would warrant him being able to play in the NFL. He has never made great decisions under pressure; he almost always underthrows when he is scrambling. He was a nice college QB. He had some good games for us. That doesn't mean that I'm blind as to what his strengths and weaknesses are. Zac is better, that is why he is playing. If Troy Smith is no drafted until the 5th round, not way in hell Bobby goes in the 5th or 6th.

I think we would have won more games if Bobby had been playing, but we'll never know.

Zac decides to run more quickly, but he had to learn to do that on the fly this year, It's not quite fair to assume that BR would not have continued to develop as well.

I think that BR will get a shot in some mini-camp, but it will be up to him to make the most of that opportunity.

isn't there a 2nd string QB from Michigan playing in the League? (I think it was Michigan)... it happens.

Good Luck Bobby.

So, realistically you could say that this was Zac's first year at the helms, well all but 2 games. He takes over and finishes 7-4(Not including the losses in which Bobby started), his first year. Seemed to look pretty damn good doing too, aside from the Troy game, while putting up Heisman-like numbers. Next year will be his second year, and I can GURANTEE he will look alot better than what Reid looked like at the begining of this year(his second year).

I am one of Bobby's biggest supporters, I always have been. Search my posts on OP, GP, and rivals, I've always had positve things to say about Bobby and I always will.

Bobby needs a pro-style offense to be successful. A more structured offense that sends a play in and runs it. I think he will make an NFL roster and might have some success if he gets in the right situation. He was the wrong QB for what Fedora and Gundy wanted. Had Les stayed, Bobby would be starting

I don't want to get into another BR debate -- especially about conjecture.

I think you mean 6-5, not 7-4 (Br started UGA and FAU; one win/one loss - and we finished 7-6). He went 5-5 in regular season, and would not have beaten UGA anyway.

I thought Reid looked great at the beginning of this year; he was playing really well when he got injured in the FAU game.

I think Robinson will do fine, but if he doens't learn how to hit his receivers, then I hope we have somebody that can... in the first half of the Insight game was pretty bad passing again. Every critique on him says he needs to improve his passing.

dude, nowhere in my response did I say I'm infatuated with Bobby Reid. Quite the contrary, I'm a huge fan of Zac and believe him to be the best QB on campus. My problem was/is with how Gundy answers questions and deals with the media. He comes across as if he could care less about the players. Given that BR was one of the most heralded recruits to come to OSU I would expect that Gundy might make an effort to see what his plans are instead of telling the paper his "speculation". Poor form in my opinion. I can't really accept the comment that it's on Bobby Reid to come to Gundy. Remember he's the man, he's 40, he could have asked BR in to discuss his future. Really, I just want our head coach to, at the very least, sound like he knows what is going on with his program and do away with the whole "acting aloof" routine.

WOW was my initial thought on that quote as well....

All I'll say is this. I don't think we would have been playing in a Bowl this season had Bobby Reid been our starter all year. That of course is just my opinion...

maybe... I think we win the Troy game without the QB change (my opinion); and probably the KU game (both games with way to many TOs); and most certainly the Aggie game.

but that's just my opinion... our offense failed us in those games... failed us horribly.
