NORMAN -- It appears his shoplifting arrest won't cost DeMarcus Granger a permanent place on the Oklahoma football team.
"I expect him back," OU coach Bob Stoops said Friday morning. "We'll see what else we do with him. I'm sure there will be some other disciplinary action."
That could make for a long winter conditioning program for Granger, the starting defensive tackle who was sent home from the Fiesta Bowl Dec. 30 after he was caught trying to steal a jacket from a Burlington Coat Factory in Tempe, Ariz.
Granger was booked into Tempe City Jail on one misdemeanor count of shoplifting late Dec. 29. Teammate Gerald McCoy posted bond, and Granger was subsequently suspended from the Jan. 2 game.
The Sooners surrendered 48 points and 525 yards, including 349 rushing, to West Virginia while registering no sacks.
Asked in postgame about the significance of Granger's absence, Stoops said: "I think that's highly overstating his importance. That's not the deal. There was a lot of missed tackles, a lot of guys not being in position, discipline containing the ball, just different issues on different occasions. Rarely was it up inside."
Other disciplinary action: A "free" payckeck from BRS&I, a Broyles gas card, and will immediately become chairman of Norman's winter coat drive; anything else "will be handled internally".
