I'm going to design a website for my scuba dive club, but don't have a web software program yet. Do I need to purchase something or can I do it in a standard PC program? ie Word? I thought at one time you could use Word for web design.

Nothing fancy, so I don't want to spend much if anything at all.

Thanks!

Word isn't going to get you anywhere. If you are new to web design...I would use Yahoo Geocities or something like that.

Check out www.lovetobakecakes.com (http://www.lovetobakecakes.com)

I designed that site with Publisher. Nothing fancy, but it got the stuff out there.

Not sure how it would mail and it definitely wouldn't arrive by tomorrow. But we can definitely work something out if you are really interested.

Microsoft offers an "Express Edition" to its web design program in the Visual Studio package.

2008 is now out and so is this Visual Web Design application. http://www.microsoft.com/express/vwd/

You'll probably need to learn a little ASP for the coding part but there are books out there that can help you. The only problem is that 2008 is a fairly new app so you may need to get the 2005 edition since there are more books about it.

Also, if you aren't wanting to spend a lot of time designing a page, it is best to find a "pre-built" web site or maybe some type of software that is geared towards what you want to do.

For example, if you are going to do a blog web site, WordPress is a good app to use and you can host your page with them.

You may want to check with your ISP or the web host you are using and see if they have any apps available to you.

In summary, if you want to learn a language, ASP.NET is Microsoft's web design language and has free software available but there is a learning curve. If you just want something that will do what you want to do, open source applications are available and mostly free. PHP (which is what this board was designed with) is a popular web designer and there are tons of blog developer's, such as WordPress.

Good luck.

Thank you gopokes. that's what I was needing to know. I've found a few dive sites that I want to "borrow" their ideas and go with that. Nothing fancy, just someplace for divers to check out what's going on.

I taught myself HTML years ago, but I guess that's old school now.

Personaly -- I don't care for any package at all. They all add a lot of junk code that does nothing.

If you don't know web design at all they may get you off the ground but I still prefer to do it by hand.

Here is a simple site I did for my old church.. nothing fancy though... linky (http://www.mtcalvarytab.org/index.html)
