After having to listen to Bob Barry and Merv stumble through another radio broadcast last night as I drove back to Tulsa from the basketball game, it made me really appreciate how good of a job Dave and John do. I can't believe a program with as much success as OU has had in the past ten years is stuck with those two announcers. I was driving so I couldn't keep track of the many mistakes I heard, but here are a few gems from Bob.

He was talking about #6 Antonio Lewis of WV and called him Antonio Smith and said he was first team all big 12.

I lost track of how many times he had to correct himself on what yard line they were on. It wasn't like he was off by a yard or two, but five to ten yards because he can't get the lines straight. This made it hard to know what was going on because players would seem to go from the 25 to the 30 and then all of a sudden be on the 18 yet somehow going forward the whole time.

He also just couldn't seem to describe what was going on very well. Maybe that's just his style, but he sure talks a lot to know really be saying much.

I know he used to do our games and maybe back then he was a better announcer, but I think his time has passed. I'm just glad that I only have to listen to them about once every five years or so and that we have a first class radio team doing our games.

I was listening to the radio when Slaton got hurt and Trent Smith, their sideline reporter, said that DJ WOlfe hit him pretty hard and he hadn't moved since. When I got home and watched what had happenned, Wolfe barely touched him and it was clearly a hamstring injury. Trent Smith is just as big of an idiot as Bob Barry.

Bob Barry seems to be a very nice guy, but it is painful to listen to him & Merv call a game. I rarely have that opportunity, thank goodness, but sometimes on the way home from OSU games we will listen if they are playing late.

I almost feel bad for the guy because you can tell he is struggling, and you can hear his spotters whisper to him on occasion. Merv sounds like he is on a sedative. And, Trent Smith is an ass clown.

Not to pile on ole Bob, but Bumpas can verify this. Several years ago, we played Nebraska in Lincoln. On the drive back home to Kansas City, we listened to the uo v Notre Dame game. At one point Notre Dame is set up to attempt a field goal, the call went something like this:

Notre Dame is attempting a 38 yard field goal. Snaps back, ball set, the kick. Its blocked! Oklahoma blocked the kick! He might return it......(silence).........38 yard field goal good by Notre Dame. We will be back after these messages.

No Joke.

Me and my friend were listening in on one of there games one time. Someone broke a big run and Barry was saying he's to the 40....the 50....the 60....the 40.

I certainly agree with the original premise... Dave and John are excellent announcers. I've never heard the UO guys.

Bob Barry was a great announcer in his heyday; fortunately, he was our football broadcaster for most of those years.

I noticed the same thing on the way back from the basketball game. I too remember when Bob was our announcer and thought at that time he was pretty good. I've heard over and over how bad they were but last night was the first game that I've listened too, OU game, in at least 15 years and I must admitt that I thought how bad it was and doubted my memory of BIg Bob calling our games.

Bob Barry just has some problems keeping up...it's tough to listen to games on the radio, because you never actually know what happens...during one of the basketball games, I was trying to listen to his call of the game and it went something like this:

"Blake Griffin gets the rebound. He dribbles behind his back like a guard!! Uh....uh....uh....two!!"

He just doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the game...I'm sure at one point, he was a great announcer, because everything you hear about the guy is that he's a legend, but it seems as though it might be time for him to retire, because he's just struggling too much....

It's definitely become a struggle to listen to games...

JimBob is right. Big Bob, with Jack Ogle were an outstanding pair when they were doing our games. Time catches up with all of us, and sadly it is doing so with Bob.

Irrespective of anything else I will always respect Bob for his coming down and handling the radio play by play of the basketball team in the first game back after the plane crash. I was at the game and took a radio specifically to hear him do the play by play and he did a fantastic job. He was absolutely the right person, at the right place at a very difficult time.

Very good point. Like I said, the guy seems like a great person, and I hate pointing out his faults. Its just so tough to listen to him now. As much as he wants to hang on, its time for him to hang it up. I think it is tarnishing his legend. At one time, he was a fantastic broadcaster.
