Coaching:
-Well prepared!!
I even liked our pre-game warm-up better than IU's.
-Offense:
Tongue-in-cheek, based on our first half performance, it is obvious that Fedora has been holding us back.
Took essentially what they gave us.
Loved the match-ups that were engineered.
-Defense:
Really surprised by the game plan, alternated 3 and 4 man lines, initially had Lavine as a spy but changed that later in the game.
Significant improvement in the pass rush and coverage.
-Special Teams:
Last few warm-up plays spent on STs, clearly an emphasis.
Kickoff coverage was improved versus the regular season
Obvious we do not have great confidence in placements
Believe Bryant was added to receive the punts while in AZ.
The timing of the bowl helped the team for the preparation. I liked the fact that the team could be home for Christmas and then still gather and be prepared for an after Christmas bowl game. If the game was played earlier in the week the preparation or the Christmas with family would have been stressed.
Defense
-Lacey played an excellent game. He spent most of his night on their #1 a 6'7" guy. He played him tough, knocked down a ball or two and gave nice run support.
-Anderson started, not sure if Cox was injured during practice but did a nice job. The last touchdown with 1 second to go was over him but he was well positioned.
-In general our coverage was significantly better than at any time this year, we had defensive pass interference penalties which meant that we were close in coverage, broke-up several passes and tackled quickly after the catch.
Our Corner play gives us optimism for next year.
-We had a defensive pass rush and even used a blitz or two that worked. First real pressure on a QB this year.
-We will miss Peterson, when Burton and Chinsa were in we did not have much of a pass rush and we were losing containment. Our Jones, Blatnick and the Juco will need to contribute. Perhaps this competition will improve the overall group.
-Jarka played in a limited role but had a really nice push on his plays. He may be the player everyone dreams of in terms of a dominating DT, but still needs another growth year.
-We are very thin at LB, we will need Glover, Richardson and the rumored Juco to play significant minutes.
-Patrick started the game and played well, this had to be his first start, so perhaps some more help in the future at DT.
-Lavine is our best LB and seems to have the best feel for coverage.
The added practices of the bowl game certainly helped our defensive play, the carryover to Spring, incorporation of the Juco talent and Fall drills should improve the overall defense. Our goal should be to look like the Georgia DL, their speed and athleticism is outstanding.
Offense:
-Bryant will receive double coverage all next year. Finding two other threats will be the job for Spring and Fall Drills.
-Pettigrew will stick in the pros. I don't see him being higher than potentially a 4th round, but he will be on a team playing on Sunday. A little on my reasoning regarding Brandon, most of the teams that will draft early have so many glaring weaknesses that they can not afford to spend a high choice on a TE. In the NFL draft, Premium will go to QBs, DEs, WRs, LTs, CBs, RBs, C and then TE.
This means that Pettigrew despite being better than many of the draftees may not be as highly placed in the draft. The teams with the luxury to draft him, those in the playoffs, in general are already well stocked at TE. Pettigrew will be perceived as a value pick, and, it appears that Waller will graduate and move on as well.
-All of this will place a high premium on the development of two TEs an extremely challenging job.
-We need Kye Staley to come in his Freshman year and contribute as much as Hunter has done at RB. Toston's injury generated the need for Johnson, Hunter will need to develop and Staley will need to be a fast learner of this offense.
-If David Washington recovers, we will have a much improved O-Line next year. Even if David is limited our O-Line will be a veteran unit and we will need to depend on it.
Special Teams:
-The addition of Sharp will subtantially improve our units. Baily has done well in KOs and may continue the role.
-Identification of a PR man is essential. I do not like the idea of putting Bryant out there on that play. BTW, if there was ever a doubt regarding his hands, replay his reception of the punt when he reached above his head and caught the punt with his hands extended above his head. I have never, never seen anyone catch a punt that way.
