West Texas A&M was a good team by D2 standards. Their only loss during the season was to ACU 10-0.

The last play ended in several laterals, because the players wanted to score 100.

The No. 2 ACU Wildcats defeated No. 9 West Texas A&M in a record-setting afternoon at Shotwell Stadium, beating the Buffs 93-68 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

The Wildcats set an NCAA playoff record with 93 points and running back Bernard Scott scored an NCAA playoff record seven touchdowns in the win. The Wildcats also shattered their school single game scoring record; previously the record was 81 points set in 1920 against Daniel Baker College. ACU will face Northwest Missouri State in the quarterfinals at Shotwell Stadium on Saturday after the Bearcats defeated Pittsburg State 38-35.

"That's one of the wildest games I've been associated with," said ACU head coach Chris Thomsen. "I'm real proud of our guys; they kept coming and coming and it was just a great performance by our guys."

ACU jumped out to an early lead on their first possession of the game after forcing a West Texas A&M punt.

Quarterback Billy Malone hit wide receiver Edmund Gates for a 65-yard touchdown to cap a three-play, 76-yard drive. The Wildcat defense forced another punt on the ensuing possession, but ACU missed a field goal and gave the Buffs the ball on the 20-yard line.

Quarterback Keith Null found wide receiver Carl Johnson from 6-yards out to tie the game at seven. The Wildcats responded to take a 14-7 lead after Gates took a handoff from Malone and raced 33 yards to the end zone. The Buffs answered again, scoring on a 85-yard kickoff return to tie the game at 14, but the Wildcats took a 21-14 lead after Scott scored on a 19-yard run to close out the first quarter.

In the second quarter, each team traded scores as ACU got touchdown runs of 54 and 64 yards from Scott and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Malone to wide receiver Jonathan Ferguson.

The Buffs answered with two touchdowns of their own as well as two field goals to close out the first half with ACU on top, 42-34.
"It was about like arena football out there today," said WTAMU head coach Don Carthel. "No team could get stops but hats off to Billy Malone, Scott, Gates and Knox."

Scott and wide receiver Johnny Knox helped blow the game open in the third quarter as ACU outscored the Buffs, 37-20. Scott scored four touchdowns in the quarter on runs of 2, 39, 44 and 44 while Knox caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Malone.

WTAMU got two touchdowns from wide receiver Charly Martin as well as a 19-yard touchdown run from running back Keith Flemming to close out the third quarter with ACU leading 79-54.

ACU added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter after Malone found tight ends Kendrick Holloway and Ryan Keeling for a pair of touchdowns, but WTAMU could not gain any ground, scoring just two touchdowns as ACU rolled to a 93-68 win.

Scott added to his impressive resume, rushing for 292 yards and six touchdowns while catching three passes for 61 yards and one touchdown.

Malone threw for 383 yards and six touchdowns, completeing 16-25 passes with no interceptions. Knox led all receivers with five catches for 125 yards and a touchdown while Gates added 87 yards and Ferguson finished with 70 yards.

"Bernard did a great job and you have to give the offensive line credit and the offensive personnel," Thomsen said. "But [Scott] did a tremendous job and that's' what he does best- score."

WTAMU quarterback Null finished with 595 yards passing and seven touchdowns while Martin finished with 14 catches for 323 yards and five touchdowns. Flemming led the Buffs with 105 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Defensively, linebacker Mike Kern led the Wildcats with 12 tackles while defensive back DuMaurier Jordan finished with 10 tackles and a forced fumble; linebacker Fred Thompson added five tackles and had ACU's only sack.

"That's the best team we've seen without a doubt," Carthel said. "If they play like this, nobody's going to beat them."
