I think its appropriate that my first post on this site should be one of good wishes for all fellow Cowboys fans for 2008. Thanks to legelegel for directing me to this site. Now, let's get the Cowboy basketball team going in conference play.

Happy New Year everyone. Maybe we can keep our fighting to a minimum in 2008. :)

And here's to hoping that the basketball team can get their act together...and soon! We need to rally around Coach Sean and the boys instead of insisting on heads rolling mid year.

A belated second day happy new year to all.

I hope someone ate a few extra black-eyed peas yesterday for me. :)

Where did the trend start and or how did it get started to eat black-eyed-peas on New Years Day? I guess I haven't google well enough to figure it out. Nevermind, I found something.

Q. How did the belief that eating blackeyed peas on New Year's Day start?

A. Back in the days of the Wild West, Southern gentility, and Northern hostility, our celebrated blackeyed peas were used strictly for the feeding of cattle in the South. During the Civil War battle of Vicksburg, the town was under siege for over 40 days.

No supplies went in and none came out The entire town was on the brink of starvation. So they ate those humble "cowpeas," thus starting a southern tradition. Nowadays blackeyes are eaten every New Year's Day to bring good luck for the coming year. All the way back to the days of the Pharaoh, blackeyed peas have been a symbol of luck and fortune.

The superstition is that those who eat blackeyes, an inexpensive and modest food, show their humility and save themselves from the wrath of the heavens because of the vanity they might have. Blackeyed peas are neither a pea nor a bean. They are lentils.

A staple in the Southern diet for over 300 years, black-eyed peas have long been associated with good luck and are traditionally eaten on New Year's Day.

Greens, thought to symbolize money, are often eaten with the peas. Hoppin' John, a dish made with black-eyed peas and rice, is one of the more popular ways of serving them.

I thought I had a can of them in my pantry last night. To no avail, I'd already eaten them. My wife never eats any kind of beans, so we had to go to the local grocery store at 10:00pm last night, because I was so adamant about eating them. I can't remember the last time I hadn't. So I had them, before midnight. I think I'm safe. Whew.

Happy Belated New Years to everybody here.
