Worst Coaching Job of the Year – Fifth Place

Larry Fedora, Southern Miss
In a controversial move, Jeff Bower was let go at Southern Miss last year after 14 straight winning seasons. He left the cupboard stocked with decent talent from a team that went 7-6, got to a bowl game, and led Conference USA last year in scoring defense and was second in total defense. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 70-14 win over UAB, but under Fedora, they’re 3-6 overall, 1-4 in Conference USA play, and are 100th in the nation in defense.

Wow. BUT, is it like OSU four years ago? Is Fedora implementing a new offense? If so, he needs some time.

I'm not sure what a new offense will do for "100th in the Nation in total defense".

Hey you are really brutal, give the man a chance. Every coach deserves a chance to get his own players. Fedora did excellent things here and I think in time will do good things there also. Lets worry about our beloved Cowboys, I can only think about one thing at a time.

I just know our LB play has improved since he took Bradford with him and USM's LB play has gone the other way. It is not just the HC that fails when a teaam does not do well.

I hope Fedora succeeds, but they were idiots to get rid of Bower.

The way I read it was, It was stupid to remove Bower who had established a winning tradition for a rookie coach; Which I agree with.

Fedora came in to a situation that probably divided their fanbase. He will have win out of the gate next year. I wish him nothing but the best. He busted his hump in Stillwater.

Fedora is a very good coach and I hope he gets it turned around. It appears he made the same mistake that Mike made and needs to get a real good DC. Just think where we would be had we hired Beckman at first.

The writer of the article may be making his assessment from afar. I had traveled over to the USM boards a few weeks ago and the fan base was agonizing over their lack of defensive talent.

My judgment of the USM fan base is they have been very knowledgeable and realistic. Their comments when we played them in the bowl regarding their own team were spot on. The mode last year was that Bower had peaked and had been on the way down for several years and change was needed.

Comments on the offensive transition this season seemed to have been spot on with the expecting a transition time. After the OC at Auburn was let go, they had more comments that it was unrealistic to expect a transition so quickly. But the continuing story was the lack of defensive talent.

I don't think its a shock to see Fedora struggling in his first season. It may take several years to get on the winning track.

I find it ironic that so many schools fire a successful coach just because he is not successful enough, only to see their program take a huge dive for years. Just a few examples:

OU- Gary Gibbs...to Blake, to Schnelly
ISU- Dan Carney...to Chizik
Nebraska- Solich (9 wins)...to Calahan, to Pelini
Michigan- coach wasn't fired, but was pretty much forced out, now look at where they are...from the winningest program in the history of NCAA football to a joke

When programs aren't winning at a super high level, everyone wants change, but you have to careful what you wish for. You don't alway get the kind of change you want.
