Oklahoma State senior Matt Fodge is one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, presented to the nation’s top punter.
"It’s an honor to be included in the top 10,” Fodge said. "It’s the top individual honor you can receive as a punter, and I’m flattered to be a semifinalist.”
The nominees were evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular areas of emphasis were: net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line, average return yardage, and percentage not returned.
Fodge has punted 20 times this year for a net average of 43.0 yards per punt. Thirteen of his punts have been downed inside the 20 with no touchbacks. The Cowboys rank fourth nationally in net punting, having allowed only five total return yards.
Interestingly, Fodge does not appear on the national individual punter rankings. The NCAA statistical minimum to be included is 3.6 punts per game and Fodge averages only 2.5.
Cyclone trickery?
There could be some trickery coming OSU’s way Saturday against Iowa State.
"These last four games, you’re looking at very talented defenses,” Cyclone coach Gene Chizik said. "So we’re going to have to create some ways to move the football, both running it and throwing it.”
Iowa State used some trick plays to compile a season-high 574 yards in last week’s 49-35 loss to Texas A&M.
"We had to be more creative in what we were trying to do,” Chizik said. "We have two or three trick plays on the docket.”
Triple-digit Dez
Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant could be in store for a big game against the Cyclones, whose pass defense ranks worst in the Big 12 during conference play. And Bryant has yet to have consecutive games with fewer than 100 yards receiving. He had 74 yards at Texas last week.
