View Full Version : On "another board"
...there was a "Blame Gundy" thread started within ten minutes of the end of the game. :vomit-smiley-001:
Have I mentioned how much I love this board?

There are other boards??

Gotta throw the ball to the stick on 4th down.
Other than that, I'm not sure what you might bitch about.
Damn it, we had them right where we wanted them, and let them spit the the hook.
There are other boards??
Ya know, I'm about to decide there are not...

My only gripe, and it is a very slight one, is that we were running the ball right down their throats on that last drive and then decided to try and throw the ball. No success, turn the ball over on downs, and that's the ballgame. I think if they had kept feeding the ball to Hunter, we might've driven the field.
Anyway, that didn't lose the game. The turnover in the first quarter, and the overturned turnover on the roughing the passer were the two huge plays. Reverse those and we win.
Great game Pokes. I'm proud of you.

There is always going to be an argument when you go for it on 4th and 7 inside your own 30 with over 3 minutes left. IMO the better play would have been to punt it away and try and hold the horns inside the 30 and play for good field position. But I'm not coaching. It's easy to second guess.
Even Gundy admitted we should have gone at it differently
there at the end. But hey, over all we played the No. 1 team
in the Nation, at their place, mucho closer than anyone
thought we would (including Lost Wages folks)

Verb, I went over there to see what was up, just out of curiosity.
I dont see how people handle reading that all day. There are some great folks over there, but there is an multitude of idiots.
There isnt one single thread with more than 3 posts that doesnt have Pessimism, pissing & moaning, or self pity in it.
We do have Lewis, but he is heavily outweighed by the solid posters!

In my mind two things cost us the game.
1. Sexton's roughing the Qb call that negated the interception by Cox. Damn, it hurt me too, cause Sexton played such a great game and it was the right call.
2. Kendall Hunter's fumble.
I was proud of the boys and we still gotta a special season and a special team here. I wouldn't surprised if this is the only loss we have this season. Very, very proud of the players, coaches and staff.

Those were costly, and you wish you could get them back, but turnovers, penalties,etc...part of the game.
Calling an inside screen on 4th and 7 with the game on the line is just wrong. You've got to go past the sticks. Inside bubble screens (ours especially) usually have to much traffic in there. The game was in the balance. That could have been done differently, and should of. The game was incredible, and damn hot! 98,500 people was just incredible to see. Very tough place to play, and our boys showed so much heart.
We were the best team. We dominated on the offensive line, and our defense gave up yards to that dink and dunk offense, but they were VERY, VERY, physical. We were more physical, and better. It just didn't happen. On the road, thats the way it goes sometime, but this team is full of great players and coaches. They have really got something special going now.
Lets get on a 10 year fun run!.....and see where that takes us.:)

Exactly. And that is all that is going on over there with some professional armchair coaches. They call it "critiquing" and remind everybody every five seconds they have every right to do so but what they are really doing is pointing fingers and telling everybody what Gundy "should have done" after the game is over. Pretty easy to do that when it's all said and done I guess.

After the A&M game last year, I decided to quit posting (venting, really) right after the game. You end up letting your emotions rule the hour, and suddenly you become an internet sensation, with a three minute segment of your life becoming all that anyone judges you on.
That said, we put ourselves in position to win the game yesterday, which is why the outcome stings so much. I told Inky before the game that I wanted to have a chance to win in the 4th quarter. We did, and that's about all you can ask for as a fan. It just hurts to have such a big one slip through your fingers.

while I think that starting a thread after the fact is a little over the top, I'm pretty sure I said last week that I was concerned about Gundy's playcalling for this game, and Gundy himself said he could have done things differently... said himself that he was to blame... I will give him credit for the successful plays, which were much more numerous.
During the chat I even asked why we were running a screen with 6 yards to go...
I think it's a fair question by the poster on the other board, I just think that it's a bit tacky to bring it up after the face and start finger pointing... that is just not necessary.
We need to bind together not start finger pointing and trying to place blame.

The play didn't work. If it had, MG would be the greatest coach ever. It worked earlier for a good gain. A tejas guy made a play the last time. THey had tried three other plays on that particular series that also didn't work( 1 Hunter run, 2 scrambles). There were other plays that kept us from winning. Having said that, part of the fun of football for fans is talking about it so I sure wouldn't discourage anybody from talking about it.

I agree that the 4th down call was REALLY bad, but let's not forget, Gundy's playcalling also had us within 4 points to the #1 team in the country at their house, with a drive to win.....I'm just sayin'....

I'm more concerned about the calls on 2nd and 3rd down than the 4th down call.

Bad Calls yes, Great Call yes. Overall a well scripted, thoughtful game.
The screen on 4th down is the obvious bad call. By that time it was clear that Dez was drawing double teams. Bringing another 2 defenders into the mix by using Dez across the middle was perhaps one of the worst calls of the year.
On the drive that we kicked the field goal, we also had a bad a call. That was the pitch to Toston where he was going against the blocking scheme. In the Red Zone you have to anticipate blitz and that the defenders are not running off the line of scrimmage. We had some nice up the gut runs on that drive, I think we could have scored the TD had we continued running at them.
Hunter's fumble was offset by McCoy's fumble leaving the difference in the game being the hands to the helmet call on Sexton negating a fine play by Cox. So even without the 'bad calls' we had an opportunity.
Overall though you have to give high marks to Gundy, he had the team ready to play the #1 on the road. We are close because of Gundy.

That's why it's so offensive to me, Fireman. I mean, who COULDN'T sit there AFTER the game and say what should've been done. It's cowardly and chicken$h!t to pretend that you knew it all along, could've made the perfect decisions during the heat of the game. People like those arrogant, "I know more than the coach" football "experts" infuriate me. And it's always the same couple of guys.

I don't know to whom you're referring, but I hope if you ever think of me as something that comes out of a chicken's ass it's a "good egg".
BTW I was screaming "Don't go for it, punt it away" when I saw them lining up for a play. I guess MG didn't hear me. But I really wasn't second guessing... I was first guessing.
If they'd made the first down it would've been a great call. Heck it may still have been a great call that just didn't work out.
If we'd had one more minute on the clock I think we go home the winner, but we'll never know.
BTW(2)... It's OK for fans to second guess because it makes no difference. Blind allegiance ad unquestioning loyalty makes you a collie worshiper.
BTW(3)... I've never seen so many Pokes fans satisfied with a loss. That was just a great FB game.

Lets face it...EVERY 4th Down play call that doesn't get the 1st down is going to be called a bad call by the fans after the game. That will never change in a million years of football.

Nope, not referring to you in any way. I appreciate your participation in this board and definitely consider you a good egg. :D
But I'm a big fan of loyalty, and I'm no collie worshiper.
