At 6-0 and No. 8 in the Associated Press top 25, Oklahoma State players and fans likely have higher hopes for the season than a trip to the Holiday Bowl. But with a tough schedule remaining, the Dec. 30 game in San Diego would be a better destination than where the Cowboys have ended up the last few years.
Eric Graves, a member of the Holiday Bowl selection committee, said Wednesday he plans to be in Stillwater for OSU’s game against Iowa State Nov. 1.
"Depending on how things play out, the Cowboys are a team we’d love to have,” Graves said. "Looking at the Big 12 Conference, we have a lot of good teams to choose from. But Oklahoma State is a team we haven’t had in a while and a team that is very exciting to watch.”
OSU has been to the Holiday Bowl once, in 1988, when Barry Sanders rushed for 222 yards and five TDs in a 62-14 win over Wyoming.
Sneaky block
OSU linebacker Orie Lemon on the field goal he blocked against Missouri last Saturday:
"I wasn’t even supposed to rush in to block the field goal, but (the player I was covering) was ineligible, so I decided I’d just run in and see what I could do. I ended up blocking the field goal.”
Bears preparing for rough road
A road trip to face one of the hottest teams in the country in No. 8 Oklahoma State is tough enough for the 3-3 Baylor Bears as they try to climb toward bowl eligibility. But it isn’t going to get any easier.
"We know (Oklahoma State is) coming off a big win over Missouri and their fans are going to be crazy,” Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin told the Waco Tribune. "We’re going to have to go on the road and earn respect.”
Baylor follows Saturday’s 2 p.m. game at OSU with a road trip to Nebraska, a home game against No. 11 Missouri, and another road game at No. 1 Texas.
"If they ain’t got a number in front of their name, we ain’t playing them,” head coach Art Briles joked.
