Any of you chefs have a really great recipe for beef stew? Something with a really good flavor.

I'm still trying to find something my mom will eat, and she used to love stew/cornbread. Thought i'd give it a try. I've made everything she used to love with no avail. You could be a hero for a day if you post a terrific recipe that she'll eat!

I don't really have a "recipe" and it's a mix between stew and soup...but here it is anyway. :)

Hamburger meat

Veggies....corn, green beans, peas, black-eyed peas/carrots/potatoes, etc.
I used cans, but you can use frozen.

Beef broth
Tomato sauce/paste
Tomato juice
Onion powder (you can use real onions)
Salt/Pepper to taste

Brown the hamburger meat (I use 2lbs and it's just Scott and I, but we love the left overs! How much you use would depend on how many your feeding and for how many days!
Add veggies (including juice), tomato sauce/paste/juice and then how much beef broth is needed. If you use frozen veggies of course you'll need more broth.

Put in the crock pot and let sit for about 4-6 hours and eat. And it's always better the next day!! :)

Like I said....not really a recipe, but that's what I make! Now I want to make some!

Her is my recipe that I have been using for years.

Meat:
You want a fairly lean cut, 1" cubed rump roast (or any other lean roast). Browned before going in the crock.

Vegetables:
Few potatoes, I like New or Red potatoes. Plenty of carrots, One good sized onion and some garlic and celery. I like a turnips, and a few radishes, it adds to the hearty root flavor.

I don't use any tomato in my stew, but I do use beef broth for the liquid. Just enough to cover all the ingredients in the crock. As you know, it will take a few hours in the crock pot to finish. The secret to my stew is using plenty of ground cinnamon. I shake a good spread on top before everything starts in the crock pot. Cinnamon is a fantastic spice for beef. Believe me, once that thing gets going, your house will smell terrific.

Just because it's me, I also like to substitute some of the broth with Guinness.

Wow Erick, that sounds fantastic. I've copied the recipe, and I'll try it next time.

Mom has been resting all day, so i've been busy! My house is spotless, the laundry is done, stew in the crock, cornbread cooked, and homeade brownies in the oven. If she doesn't eat any of that, i don't know what else to do.

I'll bet this little cool front will put her in the stew mood.

If she doesn't eat it, you tell her she won't be able to come see my bright, smiling face at homecoming!! :D And that I'm going to come eat her portion!! (ok...probably more than she would eat!! :o )

After stewing the meat all day, mom always poured a big can of V-8 in at the end when adding the veggies. It gives it a little zest. My wife thickens hers.

I was always told that if the liquid potion is thick like a gravy it is classified a stew.

Erick, how long does yours take to be ready in the crock?

My wonderful wife is making me Baked Potato Soup tonight, because she loves me and I think I'm getting sick. I've had some kind of allergy bug for the last week or so, and I've had a sore throat all day.

Geez, I don't have time to be sick right now.

Mmmmm Baked Potato Soup!!!

Here's the recipe she's using.

We really need to start a recipe thread...a place to share all of or favorites. I'm tired of the same ol food. I want to try some different recipes.

Thanks for that one Germy. I'll be making it this weekend.

How about a recipe forum? People could post their recipes as a thread and people who have tried it can leave their comments or ask questions.

I start mine around lunch time and it's more than ready by supper. I would say 4-5 hours, or until the beef is tender and the potatoes can be easily crushed with a fork.

I think the liquid needs to be a bit thicker, but not much. That way you still have something to sop the bread into. One thing I forgot to add was a little Worcestershire sauce. The last time I was in Philly, a chef from an Irish pub gave me one of his master recipe books. It was the one he wrote and scribbled in. In that book is an amazing recipe for stew that I need to post.

We already had an awesome recipe thread!

Here's my Beef Stew recipe, very similar to ericks with a few differences.

1 lb of cubed stew meat
1 onion
baby carrots
green beans-canned
2 cans of white and yellow corn
7 new potatoes- I have found that Yukon gold potatoes stew a bit faster, becasue that's what your really waiting on is them damn taters

Chop onion and add meat into sauce pan and brown. Go ahead and start the potatoes and carrots in water in your stew pot. After meat is browned and oninons have cooked down add to stew pot, no need to drain meat. Let stew for about 2 hopurs on low heat after you bring to boil. Add about a 1/3 cup of salt and pepper.

In seperate bowl, mix about 1/3 cup of water and 1/3 cup of flour. This will create a sort of mase' to thicken up your stew. Afeer your stew has cooked for about an hour, or the taters and carrots are soft, add canned green beans and corn. Stir in your flour and water mixture( only what you need to thicken it up) and reduce heat and stew for about another 20 to 30 minutes.

YUMMY!!!!! I'm making it this weekend

I made it tonight. It's a little bland for me. I don't know what i did, b/c i followed directions exactly as it said. Did Krissy add something else to it?

She said that she added more garlic than it said and more pepper and sour cream.

She said she used the bacon grease from the bacon (she said she cooked the bacon first so that she could use the grease). She said that she used about 2 tablespoons of the grease and also cooked the bacon pieces in with it. Just save a little of the bacon to serve on top.

Hope this helps.

See that's the problem with recipes, they are bland until you add all of the stuff like bacon grease and sour cream that my not be healthy for you. I guess that why the Stormont's look like we do, we don't need no stinking recipes just more grease and sour cream.:music-smiley-005:
