Heard an interesting concept put out over the airwaves here in Memphis today. With the Michigan position open and it being regarded as one of the top 3 positions available in college football (Large university, 107,000+ seat stadium, tradition, money, the ability to recruit all over the US, etc etc...... they came up with the name of Bob Stoops as a potential candidate. He was born in Ohio, went to a Big 10 school (Iowa), is regarded as one of the top coaches out there???

Thought it was just interesting. And YES I know he is one of the highest paid coaches in the country now but Michigan has more money than uO.

Personally don't think it would happen but found it interesting.

If only that dream would come true - too funny on so many levels.

Sadly, I think that the coach we used to know as the , "I'm happy here. No my cell phone didn't ring. No, that's not my agent. Yes this is the Texas game. I'm happy here" fella get's the job. That's just my input.

Honestly, Sea, from everything I've read and heard, it might not be Les...it's sounding like Kirk Ferentz is leading for it right now...

Mainly because Lloyd Carr is on the hiring committee and he and Les don't exactly get along....

And Stoops has already come out and emphatically said no...however, don't be surprised if an assistant or two is gone because of the coaching changes...one I've been reading is Venables to SMU....

Why would Venebles take the SMU job?

For that matter, why would anyone take the SMU job?

If you're Venables, and you've been passed over for bigger jobs, he might be thinking it's his one chance to prove something as a head coach...the interesting part about the Venables rumors is that supposedly, Stoops already has his replacement for DC, and his replacement would be a great hire (if true)....

The SMU job is definitely not a great job to take, though....

I think you can squeek out 7 or 8 wins at SMU. Weak conference and you are recruting in Texas. I could see it being an okay job. I am not sure if the powers that be who almost got the whole sports program shut down are still involved. I have a feeling they are but just maybe under the radar.

Well the reports coming out now say that Les will at least interview for Michigan so I would think that makes him a real strong candidate. I don't see Stoops leaving for Michigan but then again I didn't think Roy Williams would leave Kansas for North Carolina either.

I think where things get real interesting is in the domino job openings, ie the jobs that open because their coach jumps for one of the current openings.

Ha...and not too long after the Tuberville to Arkansas was posted, it looks like it's a no-go...Tubby has a $6 million buyout....

To be honest though, I think it's pretty fair to say SMU probably falls behind Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas Christian, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (and that's probably being conservative) on the recruiting totem poll. So, even though the state of Texas is extremely talent rich, SMU is pretty much getting table scraps these days.

Likewise, I don't know how easy it'd be to build a program there, simply because athletics aren't particularly an emphasis down there. The NCAA pretty much killed the momentum SMU's football program had, and it's just never really recovered.

I will agree though that there is potential for immediate improvement in Conference USA, especially since Tulsa and Houston were the only two teams in their division to finish about .500 in division play.

You can add Baylor to that list as well (ahead of SMU in recruiting).

Looks like Tuberville to Arkansas is back on...the reports are of a 10 year, $37 million contract...

Interesting that Tubby's agent was in Dallas talking with Jerry Jones...

Sexton was at the Cowboys game Thursday night in Texas, where Hog alum and team owner Jerry Jones lives.

So does this mean that Billionaire Jerry Jones is running the show with his Alma Mater?
