Backup QBs put points on board

STILLWATER — Plenty of reserve players saw quality game time in Oklahoma State's 57-13 blowout of Missouri State on Saturday.

The two reserves who were under the microscope the most were quarterbacks Alex Cate and Brandon Weeden. All throughout preseason camp, OSU coach Mike Gundy was often asked about the backup quarterback spot. The Cowboys coach still insists neither Cate nor Weeden has distinguished himself enough to determine a true backup to starter Zac Robinson.

But, at least, Saturday provided the first bit of game evidence for Gundy and the offensive coaching staff to evaluate.

"We'd like to get them some more snaps. What you saw was some first-game mistakes," co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said. "Sometimes that's expected, but it's not warranted. It just happens."

Cate had two possessions of college experience, both last season against Florida Atlantic, before replacing Robinson late in the first half on Saturday. He directed two touchdown drives in his three series. The redshirt sophomore capped one possession with a 1-yard TD run.

Weeden, a redshirt freshman, directed OSU to its final touchdown on the first of his four series.

"They ran the offense well. You didn't see any blunders or bobbled snaps of that nature," Brewer said. "They were very comfortable back there. Now, it'd be nice if we can put them in a more stressful situation where they have to throw the ball some. But we put them in the (shotgun) where they had to make the decision to hand off the ball or run. Both were correct on their reads there."

I thought they played well. I also thought Alex looked pretty small, was I just imagining that?
