STILLWATER — A portrait of Oklahoma State University donor M.B. “Bud” Seretean, who died last year, was stolen from a building on campus where it had hung for more than three decades.

The 3-by-4-foot oil painting, valued at $2,000, had been displayed in the formal entrance of the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts since the early 1970s, authorities said.

Asked whether the theft could be a prank, OSU Police Detective Larry Crites said Thursday, “It’s an unusual theft — the value of the painting is limited to a very few individuals.”

No evidence of forced entry was found. A class with about 400 students was held in the building Monday evening, Crites said. The painting was discovered missing Wednesday morning, he said.

Seretean, a 1949 graduate of OSU with a degree in marketing, had donated nearly $5 million in securities. He died in August 2007 at age 83.

Anyone with information about the theft or the whereabouts of Seretean’s portrait is urged to contact Crites at (405) 744-4213.

Tips can be called in, anonymously, if desired, to OSU Crime Stoppers at (405) 744-8477.

From Staff Reports

It was returned in a black plastic bag, a note taped to its side.

Bud Seretean’s portrait was found inside a trash bag about 6:20 p.m. Thursday in the Seretean Center.

A note reading, “I am sorry” was taped to its side.

A staff member reported the portrait stolen around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

OSU staff will hang up the portrait tomorrow, said Gary Shutt, OSU director of communications.

Bud Seretean died at 83 on August 13, 2007, in London, England.

He graduated from OSU in 1949 with a degree in marketing and was a longtime financial contributor to OSU. The Seretean Center and Seretean Wellness Center are both named after him. The M.B. Seretean Center for Health Promotion at Emory University is also named after him, according to the Seretean Wellness Center Web site."
