Oklahoma State landed a verbal commitment from class of 2009 center Torin Walker after his visit to Stillwater over the weekend, multiple sources report. The 6-foot-9 Walker held offers from Georgia, Auburn, Florida State and Clemson.
Walker joins Fred Gulley (Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville) and Ray Penn (Houston/Bush) in new head coach Travis Ford's 2009 class.
ESPN.com's Recruiting Director Bob Gibbons talks about the commitment.
"Coach Travis Ford continues his hot recrutiting streak for Oklahoma State, getting an outstanding big man prospect with enormous upside in Walker," said Gibbons. "Walker made his official visit to Stillwater, Okla. this past weekend, and was highly impressed. He committed to Coach Ford and the Cowboys before his return to Columbus."
Gibbons saw Walker in April and came away impressed.
"My first impression of Walker came from his outstanding play for the Georgia Blazers at the Boo Williams Tournament last April," Gibbons said. "He dominated inside, showing very good low post scoring skills, and outstanding rebounding and shot blocking abilities. He further valided his 'high-major' prospect rating with a strong performance in Orlando, Fla., during late July at the AAU Junior National Tournament. He is yet another blue-chipper from the seemingly endless talent supply in the state of Georgia."
Walker gives Travis Ford much needed depth in the post, according to Gibbons.
"He has the potential to give the Cowboys a needed future presence in the post," he said. "His playing style, abilities, and upside remind me of former Texas A&M standout big man Joseph Jones
