View Full Version : It's a WIN but...the D ???
See where Cal. beat the crap out of Wash St. (like 66 to 3)...and
we give up a ton of yards and points to Houston...So can we compare
or not?
Colo. and A$M just won by wiskers and TTech struggled for a time.
But honestly I just thought our D would make big improvements over
last week and I don't think we did.
Your thoughts?
Oh yes...we will go 5 and 0 before our first loss but I don't think
the D will have much to say about that.
I have to agree. I'm pretty discouraged. Seems like Houston could score at will.

UH's offense emulates - and rather well, mind you - TTek's offense. They will post gaudy numbers on everyone they play just because of their "system"...so you can't fairly judge the defense's performance overall by comparing stat's to those against "regular" or "more conventional" teams. I thought our D did fairly well, especially early. I imagine that the secondary got worn down from doing the equivalent of nearly 70 suicide windsprints during the night. If you don't think that will take a toll, try doing it for yourself. BUT...look at the positives: several QB pressures (yes, we need to drop him more), several tackles for lost yardage, and (most encouraging to me) LOTS of collisions that separated the ball from the carrier. My assessment is that we will be OK...I'm more concerned with the injuries on D than the gaudy stat's put up by a gaudy-stat-system of an offense that UH runs. :pete::cowboy::pete:

I think CC hit the nail on the head pretty much. I'm not happy with the D, but thats a tough offense. The most frustrating part of the D so far is the pass rush. Just not getting the job done, and when we did pressure tonight, we let him run all over the place.
Plenty to correct, but we will not see a better offense until Missouri.

believe it or not, I think the "D" did pretty well, considering the injuries that we suffered in that game.... and their pick and peck offense.
Losing Chatham was huge, and Miller went out for a while too... we played Donaldson at DT, who didn't see any action last week... that's how tough it was.
They had a lot of yards but we held them to 4.4 ypc rusing and under 100 yards and 6.2 ypc passing; which ain't to shabby.
We held them to 7-15 on 3rd down conversions!!
If we hadn't turned it over 3 times, the score would have been even more lopsided and I don't thing we'd even be having this discussion.
You at least made me feel a little better on this Sun. Morning Comin' Down :ousucksnana:
Anyone have an update on the injuries? Seems to be a lot of confusion
out ref. how bad, and how long???
Also it was stated on one of the boards OSU had about 14 FB recruits
and 4 BBall recruits in for the game...plus I believe one big time golfer.
Any word on commits or ones that are give us serious consideration :huh2:

We "held" the QB to about 63% completions where his career number is 68% so he was held below average. I know that's grasping but still he is a very good QB. Time will tell whether we are any better defensively.
The offense really caught fire in the second half and Hunter ran wild and Tosten looked like his old self. Dez was amazing as was Pettigrew. THe o-line dominated the 2nd half. Bryant and Pettigrew caught all but one pass. The results were good so I guess it doesn't matter.
I would like to know what UH was doing to stop Zac that we couldn't do to stop Keenum. Of course we won the game so maybe our strategy was better:o
My thoughts:
Offense - C - 1st half, A+- 2nd half, B+
Defense - B- - 1st half, C - 2nd half, C
Special Teams - A+ 1st half, A+ - 2nd half, A+

Why hasn't The Richetti Jones played yet?
I don't get it.
My guess is Jones is either hurt worse than we knew OR, he is
still being motived to DO BETTER in practice???
But back to my recruits question... Anyone know anything on the
kids that did attend?
Also ref. the guys hurt, and new info?

I thought I read somewhere that he did play, the fact that not many people know that gives me reason to believe he didn't have much of an impact.
The bigger problem I have is with the philosophy of going to a bend don't break defense. It's one thing to do it and have it work but I just can't see how going to it and giving up quick touchdowns is doing anything to get your defense better. Mike said that once they got a big lead they decided to go passive and try not to give up the big play. What a defeatist attitude. Our prevent defense still gave up TD's on 3 of 4 possessions with an average drive time of about 2:45 seconds. The long drive they had in the first half when we were playing our normal defense took 4 minutes. So basically we wanted to let them score quicker by switching our defense up.
I love Mike and want him to be the HC here for a long long time (at least long enough to beat Pat Jones) but damn his mindset on defense is totally screwed up.
I think the defense is better this year but sadly I just think they are back up to the Vance Bedford era defense.

The issue with the defense last night was that we did a poor job of containing and maintaining our gap responsibilities when our lineman rushed. We did a lot of stunts - twisting our lineman, etc - to get some pressure, and Keenum did a good job of moving around the pocket. Unfortunately, once Keenum was out of the pocket our D-line was totally out of position. Keenum then either bought plenty of time for his receivers to find an open spot or ran for good yardage. The back seven actually played pretty well by closing quickly on the short receptions, making good hits on the receivers, and tackling okay with a few notable exceptions.
Has anyone heard a thing ref. the recruits at the game
or possible commits?

Are you wanting to know about the recruits at the game? Your kind of like my kids, you think if you ask 3 times in a 5 hour period someone might throw you a bone. I'm sure if someone knows they will spill the beans.
Just busting your chops! :food-smiley-004:

This team defends the pass! When was the last time you saw db's turning their heads and making plays on the ball.? Tackling is better in the open field too. The d-line needs to make more plays. Did I mention this D is better! I am a neg-nellie when it comes to our D so this is no small prop.

guys I think we are getting better in some areas mainly linebacker and cb but I dont see much improvement at dt . I did see some at de but not as much as I was hoping for.
people have gotten all over Pat Jones but the one thing he is right on and that is the dt spot , nobody stands out that much . I think we are a year away from having a good defense . the problem is though when you play teams like WSU those teams dont tell the tale and some fans can get a false sense of how good the defense really is.
we are getting stops and creating problems so there is some good there . if give up 700 yards to Texas A&M then we probally haven't improved.

There's no way in Hades. They barely won yesterday. If we give up 700 yards to A&M, I'll personally go down to College Station and get down on all fours and back up to a barbed wire fence in a field and bellow "Bahhhhhhhhh" in my best goat impression.
