At tobacco-free OSU, fans won't be penalized

There currently are no consequences for tobacco use by visitors to the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater. Since July 1, the use of tobacco products has been prohibited on the campus.

For faculty members, said Gary Shutt, the university's director of communications, multiple offenses could lead to dismissal. For students, multiple offenses could lead to expulsion.

On Saturday, thousands of Cowboy football fans will be on campus for pregame tailgating activities and to attend the 6:05 p.m. contest against Houston at Boone Pickens Stadium. For several years, tobacco use within the stadium has been prohibited, but some fans may be accustomed to using tobacco while tailgating or roaming elsewhere on campus.

"We expect faculty, students and visitors to comply with the policy," Shutt said.

Shutt said no citations will be issued to campus visitors who use tobacco. University officials may distribute cards to tobacco-using fans, reminding them of the OSU policy.

"If we see people using tobacco, we'll give them a card," said Marty Sargent, an OSU associate athletic director. "It's not a citation. It's an education thing. It's simply a card, reminding them that our campus is tobacco-free.

"We can't possibly really police

They need to send out the fire protection students to hose down the smokers with a fire hose.

We have an employee that goes out at break two times a day to drive around off campus so she can smoke. I think smoking should be allowed in personal cars on campus. But it has been nice when talking to the smokers and not having them smell like smoke (we had one guy who's smell would linger for several minutes after he left your office).

You have someone who is crazy enough to give up their parking space? IN between 11:00 and 1:00 the corner on the strip and by Hideaway looks like an employee conference there are so many having to leave to smoke. I know a non-smoking campus is better, but really would it have killed them to leave a few smoking areas?

I work at Physical Plant Admin, and we have our own lot so parking isn't really an issue for us.

I know in the student housnig area they are going to erect some smoking shelters. But I don't know of any plans to erect any on main campus.

Hallie comes home from her job furious some days because the smokers take a ten minute break pretty much EVERY HOUR all day to go outside and smoke. She says it infuriates her that she works a full hour or more more than these people do, not to mention that she's often left alone at these times to answer the phones and man the office. Seems strange to me that the owners of the magazine let those folks get away with all that time off.

When I lived in Bowling Green, we had a lady that worked at the City that would take about 15 minutes or more every hour to smoke. Someone monitored her for a week and found she was "on break" 18 of the 40 hours in our work week. She was either puffing away or on her cell or both all the time. It was rediculous!

That's always been my beef as well. I'm not sure why employers don't have a bigger problem with that. I used to work with a lady who I swear took a 10-15-20 minute smoke break every hour. Cripes. At the end of an 8 hr shift, she might put together 5-6 hours worth of production. Looks like it pays to have a vice.

or.... since you're entitled to a 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon... you can go every hour for 5 minutes (about what it takes to smoke) and be perfectly within the rules.

That's really pushing it in my opinion. I thought the rule was that you had to work a full 4 hours BEFORE you took your 15 minute break.

My employer is getting ready to implement a no-smoking policy. I can't wait to not have to deal with a haze of smoke outside the door.

Ever wonder why they allow smoking at casinos? I think it is because gambling and smoking are addictive behaviors. They would lose most of their clientele if they stopped smoking.
Why is it that more poor people smoke than people who can afford it? Could they be poor because they smoke?
Why does the person smoking horsecrap cigarettes always sit next to me?

Just some random, insignificant thoughts.

Yeah that sounds great on paper doesn't it? Math works right out.

Sadly, the reality that I have seen is much, much longer than 5-minutes / cig.

after 4 hours you get a LUNCH break; after the next 4 hours you go HOME.

There are those that break rules... like chatting at the "water cooler", or visiting message boards during work... or like taking a little to long smoke break... just treat everybody the same and don't pick on one group simply because that one doesn't please you (collectively speaking).
