Flawed execution: Last season, Oklahoma State failed to score a touchdown on 17 red-zone possessions (possessions inside of the opponent's 20-yard line). In last week's 39-13 victory over Washington State, the Cowboys showed signs that short-yardage downs again could be problematic.
During their first possession of the game, the Cowboys had second-and-goal from the Cougar 1-yard line. Kendall Hunter was dropped for a 3-yard loss. Guard Steve Denning was penalized 5 yards for a false start. Beau Johnson was stopped for no gain on third down, and OSU settled for Dan Bailey's 26-yard field goal. Late in the first half, OSU drove from its 40 to the Washington State 3. Hunter lost 3 yards on a second-down run play. Zac Robinson's pass to Brandon Pettigrew netted only 2 yards, and again Bailey booted a chip-shot field goal.
OSU's offensive schemes were not defective, coach Mike Gundy said. It was a simple combination of Cowboy players missing assignments, while the Cougars presented an unexpected defensive look, he explained.
"It's not anything that we can't correct," Gundy said. "The truth is, (Washington State) lined up in a front that we had never seen before. It limited what we could do. It was really pretty smart on their part."
The Cowboys won by 26 points away from home, but there were enough mistakes that the coaches have numerous issues to address this week, Gundy said.
"You watch the tape, and you wonder how you won by that many points," he said.
The Cowboys host Houston at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
Kristen calling: While responding to a reporter's question during Monday's press conference, Gundy stopped to answer his cell phone. The caller was his wife, Kristen.
Gundy opened his phone and said, "Kristen, I'm in a media interview. I'll call you back. Thanks."
"She gets mad when I don't answer," Gundy explained. "She says, 'At least answer and tell me you're busy.' So I tell her I'm busy."
